2013 Spring New York Fashion Week

Shiseido artistic director Dick Page is one of the world's best makeup artists, creating to-die-for colour collections and Spring 2013 runway looks for Michael Kors, Narciso Rodriguez, and Marc by Marc Jacobs. Safe to say his skills are in high demand, which may explain why he's able to make only one personal appearance each year. During his recent day at Nordstrom San Francisco, he explained why beauty is a choice — and what you need to do to pull off red lipstick. (You've never heard advice like this. Trust us on this one.)

One of the highlights of fashion week? Heading over to Natasha Bedingfield's suite at the Empire Hotel while she was being prepped by hairstylist Ricardo Rojas and makeup artist Celeste Duquesne for the Y-3 runway show. The singer was going for an '80s vintage Chanel look (think smoky eyes, bright lips, and expertly zuzhed hair) and told us that even when getting the red-carpet treatment, she mixes her Tom Ford True Coral lipstick with, well, everything. Punk's not dead — just look to Anna Sui's Spring 2013 collection for evidence. From Siouxsie Sioux to Soo Catwoman, iconic punk women inspired the runway's cotton-candy-coloured hair and double-liner makeup look. The sex appeal of Helmut Newton's photographs inspired the designs of Max and Lubov Azria, whose models wore eyes rimmed with smudged kohl eyeliner. Their hair was blown out, pin curled, and let loose while lips were lightly coated with a pop of pink lipstick. We watched the beauty test before models took the runway in today's Beauty Book.

Rachel Zoe’s Spring 2013 beauty look had rock and roll flair, with hair resembling that of Brigitte Bardot and makeup meant to appear effortless and natural, à la Kate Moss. The nails, while kept at a shorter length, were coated with a custom blend of polishes to create the perfect sorbet shade for warmer weather. For Spring 2013, the need-to-know looks are deep side parts and messy, just-woke-up waves. From 3.1 Phillip Lim to Rodarte, designers made strong statements by stepping away from traditionally pretty styles.
