Independent films and actors were the stars of the Gotham Awards, which were held in NYC today. Brie Larson cemented her status as one to watch when she won the Best Actress award for her role in Short Term 12, beating out Hollywood favourites such as Cate Blanchett and Scarlett Johansson. Matthew McConaughey's work in Dallas Buyers Club was recognised in the Best Actor category; Michael B. Jordan won the Breakthrough Actor award for his work in Fruitvale Station, and the film Inside Llewyn Davis took home the top honour of Best Feature. The event was also attended by some of our favourite women on TV, including Rashida Jones and Amy Poehler from Parks and Recreation, and Zosia Mamet from Girls.
While Rashida, Amy, and Aubrey looked like they were having fun at the event, Rashida will soon be parting from the two actresses as she prepares to leave Parks and Recreation. Rashida and Rob Lowe announced their plans to depart the show earlier this year, and Rashida got emotional on Twitter while reminiscing about good times with her soon-to-be-former castmates. "My family. I will miss them too much," Rashida said while sharing an old photo of the entire cast riding in a van together.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have given us what we have all wanted — they've agreed to host the Golden Globes for the next two years! Yes, after their stellar hosting gig at the Globes earlier this year, the friends have agreed to keep us laughing through awards season.
Ever since their early days on SNL, the hilarious pals have charmed us with sweet, endearing and laugh-out-loud moments both on screen and off. And we can't help but dream there are more collaborations to come. Maybe even Mean Girls the Musical? In honour of these lovable ladies and today's announcement, we're taking a look back at their friendship through the years. With a mix of pictures, interviews and their back-and-forth banter, here are some of Tina and Amy's best moments!
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have signed a deal to host the Golden Globes in 2014 and 2015! The news isn't terribly surprising, given the rave reviews the duo received for their pairing at this year's ceremony. The two showbiz stars and real-life best friends have a fantastic onstage rapport, and the 2013 show saw a huge ratings boost, no doubt due in part to their presence. Are you looking forward to seeing them for the Jan. 12 awards show, or were you hoping the Golden Globes would go in a different direction this year?
The weekend kicked off with the arrival of two cheeky, charming and handsome British Harrys — one was Prince Harry, who was in town for the International Fleet Review, and the other was Harry Styles, who landed with his One Direction bandmates for the Sydney leg of their Take Me Home tour. Prince Harry gave a royal touch to the official International Fleet Review program, which was celebrated with a brilliant fireworks display across Sydney Harbour on Saturday night, and at the same time Harry performed for more than 20,000 screaming fans at Olympic Park. The city couldn’t get enough of them over the weekend!
As for other things that took place in Sydney, Lara Bingle and Sam Worthington went public with their romance, first linking up to run errands and then hitting the beach for some serious PDA. Over in the US, Kristen Stewart landed at the airport with new markings on her arm — did she add to her growing tattoo collection, or did she just get bored and doodle? — and Miranda Kerr’s cheeky son Flynn gave the cameras a cute wave. Some of the most impactful women in Hollywood, from studio heads to A-list actresses, came together in Beverly Hills at today's Variety Power of Women event to celebrate good works. Kerry Washington, Amy Poehler, Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, Jennifer Hudson, and Elizabeth Banks were all honoured for their charitable efforts on behalf of a range of good causes, including AIDS prevention and heart disease.
Amy Poehler was given a Lifetime Impact Award for her partnership with Worldwide Orphans Foundation. She gave a powerful and occasionally tearful acceptance speech, but couldn't resist injecting some of her signature humour into her address. She told attendees that if they took away anything from the event, it should be that "giving to charity is good for your skin and makes your ass smaller."
On a more serious note, Nicole Kidman, who was recognized for her work with UN Women, credited her mother's independent streak with sparking her commitment to the cause. "I was raised by a feminist mother. She said, 'Never be frightened of using the 'F' word."
Charlize Theron, founder of the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Program, similarly took the opportunity to honour her own mum, who joined her at the luncheon. The actress was brought to tears as she dedicated the tribute to her, thanking her for both teaching her how to be a "decent human being," and "for turning me into a p*ssy every time I talk about you."
We're only just catching our collective breath now, with a big week of celebrity events keeping us very much entertained. The Emmy Awards on Monday brought out the likes of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, Rose Byrne and her boyfriend, Baordwalk Empire's Bobby Cannavale, and Will Ferrell — with some unexpected guests in tow. The Australia's Next Top Model finale was held on Tuesday night, and Jennifer Hawkins was on hand to announce the winner, while the Brownlow Awards sent lots of lovely ladies down the red carpet in their best dresses. In between? We saw bikini bodies, Miley Cyrus' nearly nude body, celebs who've just given birth returning to the spotlight, Miranda Kerr and her cute family strolling the streets of New York and much more. Click through to see it all!
Jessica Alba showed off a new, shorter hairstyle when she attended the premiere of her latest film, A.C.O.D., in LA last night. While on the red carpet, Jessica met up with her co-stars Amy Poehler and Adam Scott, both of whom also star together in Parks and Recreation, which, coincidentally, premiered its sixth season last night. Jessica was excited to meet up with Amy and Adam again as she posted a snap ahead of the event on Instagram of the two actors and wrote, "Can't wait to see these two kids at the A.C.O.D. premiere tonight." Though the project hasn't got an Australian release date yet, be sure to check out the trailer for A.C.O.D. before it comes to a cinema near you.
This year's Emmys have wrapped up, and while the memorial segments reminded us of what we lost, there were also plenty of uplifting moments at this year's event. Some of the winners gave unforgettable acceptances, a few presenters stole the show, and Neil Patrick Harris proved he was the host with the most (dancing skill). It was an Emmy show to remember, but if you're already having trouble remembering what made the telecast so special (or didn't get a chance to watch it), just start clicking.
The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards are over, and some of the small screen's most famous faces took over the Nokia Theatre in LA. It's the second time Neil Patrick Harris has hosted the show, and he opened alongside past hosts Jimmy Kimmel and Jane Lynch before Jimmy Fallon and Conan O'Brien also joined the group on stage. That wasn't the only surprise at the start of the show, though — when Merritt Wever won the first award of the night for best supporting actress in a comedy, she gave a quick thanks before saying she "had to go." She was presented the award by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who had the crowd cracking up when they told Neil to take his pants off before crawling up the stairs.
This year's Emmy presenters included actors and actresses like Matt Damon, Jon Hamm and Sofia Vergara. Will Ferrell took the stage as a "last minute" presenter alongside his kids, and stylish stars like Kerry Washington and Claire Danes also took the mic. Throughout the show, there were also several thoughtful speeches commemorating actors and actors who passed this year, including a Jane Lynch's sweet tribute to Cory Monteith and Edie Falco's moving words about James Gandolfini. See all the 2013 Emmy winners, and take a look at all the pictures from this year's show!
