The Famous Women Who Have Bravely Shared Their Health Struggles

In her moving op-ed yesterday, Angelina Jolie revealed that she had a preventive double mastectomy after learning she was at high risk for breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

In her moving op-ed yesterday, Angelina Jolie revealed that she had a preventive double mastectomy after learning she was at high risk for breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Other women who might be at risk motivated the actress and activist to speak out about her private health decision. Angelina wrote: "Cancer is still a word that strikes fear into people's hearts, producing a deep sense of powerlessness. But today it is possible to find out through a blood test whether you are highly susceptible to breast and ovarian cancer, and then take action."

As Angelina's message of prevention and empowerment spreads across the Internet, she's not the only famous woman to generously share her health struggles. Christina Applegate and Wanda Sykes have discussed mastectomies. Others like Beyoncé Knowles and Nicole Kidman sacrificed some privacy to add to the conversation about miscarriages, while women like Gwyneth Paltrow and Brooke Shields have helped increase acceptance of post-partum depression. Whether about mental illness, fertility struggles, or cancer, when recognised and accomplished celebrities open up, it helps raise awareness and understanding about the health issues that impact women. Read through for quotes from some of these brave women now.

Famous Celebrity Breast Cancer Survivors

In honour of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month and today being Pink Ribbon Day, we're paying tribute to some of the celebrities who fought the disease in a very public way. We applaud both the courage of these women and the efforts they have made in speaking out for the cause — some were followed by cameras to air their experiences, while others have established charitable organisations that actively promote breast cancer awareness. Chloe, Christina, and Viola Get Celebrated as Women in Film

Tuesday night's annual Crystal + Lucy Women in Film Awards brought out many of Hollywood's most famous leading ladies.

Tuesday night's annual Crystal + Lucy Women in Film Awards brought out many of Hollywood's most famous leading ladies. Meryl Streep was on hand to award her good friend, The Help star Viola Davis, with the Excellence in Film statue. The 2012 award season saw no rivalry between Viola and The Iron Lady's Meryl — though Meryl won the Oscar, Viola took home a SAG Award. There's only love between the former Doubt costars, and Meryl praised Viola last night by calling her "a lion-hearted woman." Other ladies picking up honours were Christina Applegate and Chloe Moretz, who donned Max Mara for a Crystal + Lucy kickoff party on Sunday evening. Max Mara, a sponsor of the awards, outfitted many of the women on the carpet, including Viola, Meryl, Christina, and How I Met Your Mother's Cobie Smulders. Jenna Dewan-Tatum added more colour to the proceedings in a teal jumpsuit.

Hall Pass: You Can Pass on This Unfunny Mess

Hall Pass is the latest movie from the Farrelly brothers, the writing/directing pair who established their distinctive style with comedy classics like Dumb and Dumber and There's Something About Mary.

Hall Pass is the latest movie from the Farrelly brothers, the writing/directing pair who established their distinctive style with comedy classics like Dumb and Dumber and There's Something About Mary. This time around they stick to their formula of a basic plot sustained by edgy jokes and gross-out humor. Jason Sudeikis and Owen Wilson play Fred and Rick, a pair of buddies who are bored with their respective marriages. Rick (Wilson) is a suburban dad who can't help checking out other women, while Fred (Sudeikis) is basically a dog who seems to hate being married altogether. Neither can control his roving eyes and inappropriate comments, and when their wives (Christina Applegate and Jenna Fischer) get fed up with their antics, they each give their husband a "hall pass" — a one week break from being married. With their spouses out of town, Fred and Rick assume they're about to go wild as single men on the prowl. Their misadventures make for a journey that's often gross, vaguely offensive, and unfortunately, rarely funny. Find out why I wasn't into Fred and Rick's bachelor adventure when you read more.

Christina Applegate Talks About Giving Birth to Sadie Grace

A few weeks ago Christina Applegate gave birth to her beautiful baby girl, Sadie Grace, her first child with fiancé Martyn LeNoble.

A few weeks ago Christina Applegate gave birth to her beautiful baby girl, Sadie Grace, her first child with fiancé Martyn LeNoble. The cute bub made her debut on the cover of People magazine and her proud mother was recently on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to share more about her experience with motherhood so far. As we all know, Christina’s journey to becoming a parent hasn’t been an easy one, especially with her battle with breast cancer, which resulted in a double mastectomy. She revealed to Ellen that she went drug-free for the birth (“I didn’t like it, I didn’t like the feeling of numbness . . . I opted for ‘go all the way.’ Feelin’ it all, baby!”) and that when Sadie was in her arms for the first time she let her gown drop, even though she’s been sensitive about her upper-body region since her operation (“this part of my body is very private to me”). It seems like Christina has taken to motherhood really well, so see her gush about baby Sadie as “the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”

Mariah Reveals Twins' Sex! Christina Applegate Gives Birth!

It feels strange that in the past week there hasn’t been much celebrity baby talk.

It feels strange that in the past week there hasn’t been much celebrity baby talk. We’ve just continued to admire Natalie Portman’s amazingly-dressed baby bump at the SAG Awards. But celebs are still sharing their happy news. A friend of Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon has revealed to Life & Style magazine that the expectant parents of twins are having a boy and a girl! “It’s all about pink and blue these days,” said the friend. “It’s truly going to be a dream come true for them. They get a son and daughter.” Mariah goes on to tell the magazine that fans on Twitter guessed either two boys or two girls, but no one guessed one of each. Meanwhile, Christina Applegate has welcomed her first child with fiancé Martyn LeNoble, daughter Sadie Grace, who was born on Jan. 27 in LA. Her rep says, “Mother and daughter are doing great.” Congrats to Christina, Martyn and their growing family!
