How-To: Milkmaid Braids

2

When I saw Terry Richardson's pictures of Lara Stone in the June/July issue of Vogue Paris sporting some marvellous milkmaid braids, I knew it was time to start re-wearing the trend that was so popular back in '08/09. I LOVE the contrast between the soft style and Lara's dramatically lined eye and bold red lip, but if you'd prefer to tone it down, of course feel free. Check out more pics below and then keep reading for tips on how to recreate this style:

Keep reading . . .Begin by applying a smoothing serum like Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum ($27.95) to damp hair. Next, coat your hair with a smoothing gel to help prevent frizz and flyaways. I like Biolage smooththérapie Smoothing Gel (approx $17.65). Then, create a centre part and blow-dry your hair downward at a 45 degree angle. Use a nozzle if you want a smooth look, or go nozzle-less for a more relaxed look.

Using your centre part as a guideline, create two braided pigtails that start by your ear; secure each braid with a small hair elastic. If you have long hair, try and cross the braids over the top of your head like you see in the photos and secure each side with bobby pins, being sure to tuck under the wispy ends. If your hair is too short, buy a hair piece like Ken Paves' Hairdo 25" Clip-In Layered Straight Vibralite Extension ($139.95) to go around your head. The added length will help you create longer braids. Pull out a few loose wisps at the front and spritz hair generously with a firm-hold hairspray.
