How-To: Safely Dispose of Nail Polish

Updated 04/07/10 3:05 PM · Posted by BellaSugar Australia · 4 comments

Who finishes nail polish? Seriously I've never been able to do it. It's either clumpy, I'm over it or it would just be impossible unless I lived until 160 and painted my nails every day.

Whatever the reason, we shouldn't just hold onto old polishes forever. However, some formulas contain toxins like formaldehyde, toluene, and DBP—which is why we recommend looking for safer "three-free" lacquers. If nail polishes aren't properly disposed of, these dangerous ingredients can seep into the soil and water supply.

Whatever you do, don't throw polish into the trash or down the drain. (It is paint, after all.) Your city's hazardous-waste collection is the answer. Search the web to get the scoop on the details of your local centre. And since it's Earth Month, be sure to check out what other beauty items can and can't be recycled, too.

So why do I pay for garbage service when I gotta take all my trash elsewhere? Aren't I polluting and destroying the earth by driving my car to the recycling center? Why don't we all go naked, eat dandelions and sleep in cardboard boxes! Hey Happy Easter - I'm eating that cute little lamb, skewered some shrimp and grilling them with some super cheese loaded cornbread with gobs of honey butter, veggies and cocktails....:bunny:

The best way to dispose of nail polish, as well as paint, is to leave it uncovered until it solidifies or paint or pour it on an object that can't be recycled.

@ AmberHoney.. You pay for garbage services, even if you take the trash elsewhere, because when you drop that bottle of polish off at the depot, it doesn't evaporate in thin air. It actually has to be prosessed.
