Are you ready for this? A recent poll by UK retailer Superdrug showed that the average woman spends approximately $15,000 on makeup in her lifetime. Now I love lipstick more than your average chick, but $15,000? That's like an apartment deposit. Or enough money to have the same luggage set as Beyoncé (Louis Vuitton, dahling.)
The stats:
The results show that a woman spends about 20 minutes doing her makeup each day. (That's 330 days out of her lifetime.)
According to the study, from the ages of 16 to 65, a woman shops for cosmetics about five times a year. Each time she'll spend roughly $43, equalling about $216 a year.
To break it down further, that's about $2,750 on eyeshadow, $1,780 on lipstick and $3,770 on mascara in total.
I have heart palpitations that I may spend nearly $4,000 on mascara. That's a LOT. Does it sound any less crazy to you? How much do you reckon you drop on cosmetics over the course of a year—let alone your lifetime?
Only five times a year!? I'm like five times a month!
1yes, it sounds possible. I know some folks who have loads and loads of make-up and back up make-up...and not the drug store stuff...splurge on MAC. Sephora, etc.
2I think this is possible, but I think the time spent on make up is too long. I time myself at 6 minutes for my work look, and 20 for a very special event. I wish mascara wasn't so expensive, and a frequent purchase.
3Dear God, this is so not me. But then again, I'm a make-up artist aspiring to make a carreer out of this. (As in, I'm an artist and I use make-up as my art. I hate the misconception)
I probably spend one thousand this year. I know, horrible. But every single product I buy is carefully thought out. I have no regrets!
4I don't think I spend this much, I rarely use makeup anyway. Mascara is basically the only thing I use everyday.
5I think this is probably kind of low for some of us. One night at work, we were talking about what would happen if I lost my bag or, god forbid, it got stolen... So, we tallied up the total of makeup in my handbag and I hit over $500! And that didn't include the cost of the (now vintage) Coach makeup bag that it's all in, or the iPhone in my handbag, or even the handbag itself!
So, if I carry around $500 worth of makeup daily, then, yes, I could easily spend $13,000 in a year.
6Haha really only 5 times a year? I seem to go every week or so. Just went to this huge sale today as well
7I think that might be on the low end of t he scale. I know many ladies out there that spend $150 per shopping trip on makeup alone!!
8I spend somewhere around $60 on makeup per year. That said, I only use mascara, eyeliner, some occasional lip gloss/chapstick, and eyeshadow. Filmgirl81, I can't believe you can get your makeup on so quickly! Honestly, it takes me 15-20 minutes to do mine because I'm so OCD about perfect eyeliner and unclumpy lashes.
9I'd say I definitely spend more than $196 per year, but I have no idea of how much more.
10while i have a LOT of makeup, a majority is from drugstores (BOGO sales= 2 for the price of 1!!) so while i spend a bit, its prob not 196/year. maybe some years though! and since i work at a drugstore, i end up buying something makeup related almost every week LOL
11omg this makes me feel like a bad spender
12recently jst got hooked on make up &
i've spent around 700-800 this past month alone! mostly from benefit & only 1 lipstick from chanel..
loving the things i bought, tho!
I think the estimate is on the low side, I know I spend more than $200 a year on makeup and I don't think I over do it. I'm with filmgirl81, during the week I take less than 10 minutes for work make-up but if I'm going out it can take lots longer.
13I probably spend around $2000 a year. I spent $400 at priceline alone last quarter (thank god for the gift vouchers they send you!
). It's a scary number but I go through foundation and mascara like
it's going out of style.
