Lara Bingle's Makeup Artist Max May Video Tutorial

Guest Edit: Max May Takes Us Back to '80s Glam

We're delighted to bring you an exclusive, stop motion video from celebrity makeup artist Max May. He's known in the industry for creating really luminous, dewy, sexy makeup looks (see Lara Bingle), and in this video he shows us how. A cool, new take on the makeup tutorial, Max runs us through his homage to the loud, proud and colourful world of high-end cosmetics in the '80s, after the jump.

"I was inspired by photographer Guy Bourdin and the images he took of all these brightly coloured women on all the old YSL cosmetic campaigns from the '80s. I kind of feel like Tom Ford [also] makes some sort of homage to this in his campaigns, but in a more luxe, sensual way.

"I wanted to play with bold colours, but I wanted to show the process in a way that was entertaining and inspiring! Stop motion is about taking a single shot after every single stroke, [and] basically that meant I would draw a fraction of the eyeliner, take a shot, and then draw a little more before taking another shot.

"As you can imagine it took a few hours, but when it's all placed together it's pure magic and brings the whole look to life. Christina — our model with a very classic look — gave it that feeling of timelessness until the very end. Then she smiles and drinks from the swirly straw I somehow brought all the way home from a vendor under the Eiffel Tower in Paris!" — Max May
