Looking at the endless supply of Hollywood heavyweights trotting out a racy red pout for party season often makes most mere mortals sigh. Most of us would love to wear such a bold colour 24/7 but the practicalities of life – eating, drinking, talking – make it difficult. There are all manner of faux pas' to consider: keeping up with the constant, constant rounds of reapplication, keeping it within a 3km radius from your teeth, making sure you don't resemble the Joker after a quick pash under the mistletoe.
But then a product like Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick ($26.95) comes along promising to take care of all that and you think to yourself, shall I give it a whirl or is it just fobbing me off with all those promises of being "food-proof" and "non-drying"? We know what you're thinking: uh huh, heard it all before buster and there ain't no such thing as "comfortable wear for 12 hours" when it comes to lip colour.
Which is why, Pop, Fab and I are putting our hands up for human testing. We're going to wear Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick in Top Tomato (a lovely rich red) all day, everyday – seriously, Pop actually slept in hers last night – being guinea pigs (glamorous ones of course) to those claims. Here are our findings from day one: Keep reading . . .
Pop: A glamorous red pout always reminds me of old Hollywood (and my all-time favourite style icon Carolyn Bessette Kennedy!). My search for the perfect red resembles the tale of Goldilocks and The Three Bears – not too orange, not too blue, not to garish, but jusssst right. That’s why I love Top Tomato (or Top Tom-ah-toh as Bella calls it) – the perfect classic, elegant, red-carpet-ready red. It makes me feel like a screen goddess just sitting in front of my computer and writing about the real stars.
Fab: I find red lippy hard to match with clothing sometimes – worn with a lot of colour it can look trashy rather than chic, but this blood red stain was a pleasant surprise. It has enough depth to make it work with any ensemble, it's working well as a light stain for day and then I'll apply another coat for the evening. My new statement accessory: my red lips!
Bella: Afternoon event. Too many canapés and mocktails that I will not be able to refuse. But I'm wearing a red lip. Well it is meant to be food-proof. Surprising. It stays on. Like really stays on. No-one would ever know that I'd eaten. Very, very good. (As was the leek and goat's cheese tart.) Headed out for pizza to celebrate a friend's new job after, it's still going strong when it's time to hit the hay at 11pm. (Note: If food can't remove it, neither can water. Face wipes all the way.)
