During New York fashion week, the hair and makeup sent down the runway is often just as important as the clothing. While it might not be the first thing people look at, the skilled creations makeup artists and hairstylists devise is definitely worth a second look. From twisted ponytails to metallic eyes, get inspired by Fall 2013's most memorable beauty moments.
Marc Jacobs Channels Punk-Rock Chic For Fall 2013
Marc Jacobs has been known to pull out all stops for his runway beauty, and with custom-cut wigs — and a huge nail polish surprise — he didn't disappoint for Fall 2013. Lead stylist Guido (for Redken) turned every model into a brunette, cutting each girl's hair into a punk pixie backstage. And makeup artist François Nars put his focus on a dark eye makeup look that featured just a touch of shine.
The look: A greasy smoky eye, brunette punk wigs, and red nails.
The inspiration: Rocker girls like Joan Jett and Marianne Faithfull.
Overheard backstage: Marc Jacobs is releasing a new nail polish line this year.
Keep Up With the Beauty-Savvy Celebrities at New York Fashion Week
During New York fashion week, it's not just all about the runways. The stars descend on the tents hoping to find their next red carpet hit from the Fall 2013 collections, often showing off the biggest trends of the moment. From the front row to the after parties, follow Hollywood's hottest women and get an up-close look at their outstanding hair and makeup.
2013 Fall NYFW: Eyeliner as Lip Colour Lends an Edgy Vibe at 3.1 Phillip Lim
Done up in ruddy-hued lips and strands styled with just a touch of texture, the models at 3.1 Phillip Lim were urban girls with a bit of an edge. And in order to capture that sexy, naughty, dangerous vibe, Frédéric Fekkai lead stylist Paul Hanlon ensured models' hair texture was not too precise. But it was a reddish-brown lip look, conceptualised by makeup artist Francelle Daly for Nars, which really brought this down-town girl notion to life. All that was missing? A rocker boyfriend.
2013 Fall NYFW: The Bronze Eye Look You'll Wear Everywhere at J. Mendel
For Fall 2013, the makeup (and clothes) at J. Mendel were conjured up with the average girl in mind. Revlon Global Artistic Director Gucci Westman created a bronze eye that was high on shine and low on steps. A sleek, textured ponytail completed the look.
The look: Bronze eyeshadow, low ponytails, and nude nails.
Key tips: Use a paddle brush to blow-dry hair instead of a round brush, and then finish with a rounded flat iron for curl.
Overheard backstage: Westman selected the playlist for backstage, including The Beatles, Radiohead, and a little Jay-Z to finish.
2013 Fall NYFW: Gorgeous, Wearable Hair and Makeup at Carolina Herrera
Carolina Herrera wanted her models to look gorgeous, and that they did. For the elegant look, Orlando Pita for Moroccan Oil gave a new twist (if you will) to the victory roll, while Diane Kendal for Mac Cosmetics added a gorgeous shade, Hot Tahiti, on the lips. Nails were adorned with Essie's Ladylike to streamline the elegant factor.
Beauty Spotlight: Catherine McNeil Is Back!
She took a break from the modelling world a couple of years back in 2010, and we've been feeling a major comeback since last year . . . But nothing heralded Catherine McNeil's arrival back in the spotlight like the week just gone. Storming the Fall 2013 New York Fashion Week runway for Jason Wu, Diane von Furstenberg and Zac Posen (to name a few), this Aussie model is back with a vengeance — and gosh, how we've missed her. With those razor-sharp cheekbones, looong cat-eyes and sexy, choppy hair, she's one face we're glad to have our eyes on again. Click through to see some of Catherine's runway looks, and a couple of her amazing editorials from the last year — and welcome back, Cat!
Exclusive: Eugene Souleiman on One of the Strongest Hair Trends to Come Out of NYFW
Fashion week brings a lot to the beauty table in terms of hair, makeup colour palettes and textures. Dissecting the mammoth amount of looks can be tricky, but there's always a few trends to stand tall and actually impact the way we'll wear our hair or makeup in the upcoming season. One of the hair industry's greatest minds is Wella Professionals' global creative director Eugene Souleiman, a man who speaks fluent runway hair and is known for starting said trends.
For DKNY's Fall 2013 show, Eugene tapped into the brand's timeless aesthetic for inspiration. "For this collection, Donna revisited some of her classic looks, resulting in a modern capsule collection that revolved around her iconic pieces. This got me thinking about the classic DKNY woman, and I wanted to create a hair look that embodied her spirit," says Eugene.
The result? Oh, only one of Fall's (Autumn/Winter) strongest hair trends. His "Encapsulated Hair" look is very grown-up with its sleek centre part, and more importantly, its stupidly wearable. You only need to look to (from left) DKNY, Rebecca Minkoff, Jill Stuart, and Vera Wang — as well as Derek Lam and Nicole Miller — to see the trend taking shape. Click through find out how Eugene created the look.

Fall 2013 New York fashion week is in full swing, and for those unable to make it to the tents, our backstage coverage is second best. 2013 Fall NYFW: See the Studded Nails, Bright Lips, and Big Hair at Kate Spade
Kate Spade encompasses flirty style, with bright colours and bold prints, and this year her muse was the confident New York City girl. With inspiration from the '70s (a trend we're seeing a lot of this fashion week), Kate's girl had big, beautiful hair and "look at me now!" lips. Plus, Deborah Lippmann made sure the NYC ladies were fully decked out with studded nail art. Disco hasn't looked this good since, well, the '70s.
