That hair. That song. That sultry end. All of it makes you fall in love with Chanel No. 5 all over again. Not that any of us needed any prompting (especially after this study was released). A beautiful, beautiful ad, and one that we never tire of watching. A true masterpiece.
Runners up: YSL Parisienne featuring Kate Moss, Flora by Gucci featuring Abbey Lee Kershaw and Dolce & Gabbana Fragrance Anthology featuring Naomi Campbell, Eva Herzigova, Claudia Schiffer, Tyson Ballou, Noah Mills and Fernando Fernandes.
When she turned up to the Golden Globes sporting the best apricot blush/mandarin lip combo that we've seen in a long while, we knew that Miss Jones would be one to watch. And she hasn't disappointed. With a seemingly endless array of hair and makeup styles up her sleeve, January manages to switch things up at the drop of a hat going from girl-next-door to sex bomb to rock chick all while displaying the most perfect peachy blush and flawless porcelain skin ever. Ever, ever. Jealous, us? We would be if we weren't a little in love. Sigh.
Runners up: Ashley Greene, Freida Pinto and Jessica Szohr.
Surely you're not surprised? Just look at how many hair and makeup styles she's had in the last 12 months – and you have no idea how difficult it was to narrow it down to these pictures alone – taking inspiration from the catwalk (bows were big for Marc Jacobs too), the movies (Edward Scissorhands anyone?) and the bible by the looks of things. Ah Lady G. There's never a dull moment.
Runners up: Lily Allen, Drew Barrymore, Katy Perry and Rihanna.
There was no other colour worth talking about this year; Mad Men and Christina Hendricks' fiery locks made sure of that. The hue definitely shone in 2009 with stars including Rachel Evan Wood, Coco Rocha, Nicole Kidman, Isla Fisher, Karen Elson, Shirley Manson and Carey Mulligan showing us how it's done (naturally or not).
What a difference a year can make. Back in 2008, it was all about Cheryl Cole (Dannii's fellow judge on UK talent show, The X Factor). The thing was, Dannii had nice enough hair but she hadn't quite nailed it. But fast forward to 2009 and it's all about Dannii. Not only does she have a killer bob – could it be more shiny? – she has a seriously smokin' younger man who is desperate to have her children, she's off the Botox and she's finally holding her own against Cheryl.
Runners up: Zac Efron for finally, finally losing the long fringe (thank you Zac; now the crush can commence); Ginnifer Goodwin for having the courage to go gamine (you go girl); Halle Berry for returning to her Best Haircut Ever (the pixie crop) and Ruby Rose for actually managing to pull off a peroxide quiff (something I would not have predicted possible in 2008).
OK, OK, I know the whole point of these is to actually make a decision about something, but lip colour was just too hard this year. It started at the Emmys when stars got embroiled in a red vs. nude-off and we sat on the fence because we could see the perks of both colours. Here are just a few stars showing us how they rocked a racy red (clockwise from top left: Drew Barrymore; Chloë Sevigny; Hayden Panettiere and Alexa Chung) and nude neutral (clockwise from top right: Toni Collette; Olivia Palermo; Ginnifer Goodwin and January Jones) in 2009. I challenge thee not to love both.
Runners up: Brick red (Anne Hathaway declared herself a fan, as did Daisy Lowe) and pink, in all its watermelon/raspberry glory.
Melissa made the journey from Home and Away to Hollywood seem simple; always scoring top marks for her beauty and style choices. I was bowled over by her old Hollywood charm when she attended the opening of Chadstone Shopping Centre in Melbourne earlier this month–the deep berry lip and loose Marcel waves really work against her porcelain skin. And of course it seemed only fitting that she should earn the award whilst on Australian soil.
Runners up: Rose Byrne, Toni Collette, Teresa Palmer and Isla Fisher. Good work flying the Aussie style flag girls!
We thought MAC had it in the bag the double singing of Cyndi and Gaga (could you get two ladies more suited to the brand? Methinks not). No one could surely trump that we thought. But then L'Oréal pulled the Krugermeister out of the bag and we did wonder if the most stylish lady around town could knock them off their perch. But MAC has to remain triumphant for they have scored not one, but two legends to do ambassador duties and I predict a fun-filled 2010 with these two around.
It's rather lucky that we didn't announce this last week, for I was straight up about to give it to one of these runners up. But then I saw this snap of Nicole and seemed to be the only person focusing on her hair. Her HAIR people, not the powder. Look at it. Pretty isn't it? I think she looks a bit like Amy Adams, no? (Or Amy Adams looks like her if you want to be all pedantic and grouchy.) She looks just perfect I would say. None of that hair that's so sleek and straight, it draws her face down. This look is polished, yet tousled; sleek, yet stylish; elegant, yet effortless. And I hope we see much more of it in 2010.
This award is probably the hardest to narrow down; we've seen so many enchanting makeup looks throughout the year and I know what you're thinking, Leona Lewis takes the crown over some of Hollywood's hottest heavyweights? Surely not. But yes, she does. Because she got the makeup combo exactly right. I'm not talking about the dramatic eye/neutral lip rule (though she did that too); I'm talking about the fact that she picked something that was different enough to stand out – no winged eye or red lip in sight (check) and a twist to the classic smoky eye formula thanks to emerald and golden-green hues (check) – yet something that is extremely wearable for the everyday woman. Flawless and functional, now that's what we like to see.
