History is filled with brave, stylish women who inspired us all by breaking the beauty mould; from Marilyn Monroe's bleach blonde curls, to Mary Quant's swingin' sixties bob, and right through to Amy Winehouse's imitable winged eyes. These ladies are veritable beauty icons and have transformed the way we groom forever. So we're giving them their due with a slideshow of our ten favourites.
OK, Miles, imma just say it, because someone's got to: being friends with Joaquin Phoenix is seriously damaging your rep. Just because he wanted to be a rapper, doesn't mean you should, too, K? Pictured here backstage at the MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto, Miley's a loooong way from Disney darling now. I'm not really surprised at her choice of get-up — braid, bandana, Amy Winehouse liner and 18 lines of lashes — Miley has been known to try just-about-every-beauty-look-under-the-sun in the last few years, but I can't say that I'm digging it. The braid looks all scraggly and super thin, not to mention a totally different colour to the rest of her hair. The fresh pink on the lips is just about all I can handle, you?
I guess if your makeup has any chance of competing against a one-legged outfit then it knows it has to be bold. And bring out the big guns. Which is exactly what Rihanna did during the Pepsi Super Bowl Fan Jam late last week. She seems to be able to pull off the Bond-girl feline eye with somewhat more class than Wino, don't you think? Or is it too heavy for your liking?
What are freckles? Clinically speaking, a freckle is an unusually heavy deposit of melanin at one spot in the skin. 'Freckling' is an uneven distribution of melanin pigment across the skin surface. These wee brown spots develop as a result of a combination of genetics and sun exposure. For some, they're born with 'em. For others, freckles appear over time in response to sun sensitivity. Pesky or cute? Well, with our sun-smart face on, we're gonna go with cute. In fact, lots of stars are peppered with these sweet spots, and we've got photos to prove that freckles have a certain kind of natural appeal. What do you think?
Freckles have long been an issue for some. Mine only appear in the summer, forming a lip-liner-style line around my upper lip. I don’t mind – I think it’s pretty cute and no one’s told me differently so that’s that.
But I have friends who pile on the slap because they can't stand to be seen with them. Some go to such extreme lengths to keep them under wraps that I've never actually seen the offending markings. Honestly, I think the CIA could learn a thing or two from some of my friends.
What are your thoughts about freckles? Do you have them? Do you hide them?
The reason I ask is that I've been looking at snaps of Amy Winehouse and what with all the attention-attracting cleavage on display, it seems everyone’s completely failed to notice the splattering of freckles across her nose. Now I’ve personally never seen Amy with freckles which begs the question, is she finally out and proud? Or is she having a St Trinian's moment and drawing them on to up her quirkiness factor. Who knows with Amy . . .
