Aussie model Miranda Kerr will tonight lead the charge of switching off the lights as the global ambassador for Earth Hour 2011. Miranda says:
"Each of us has a responsibility for the sustainability of our planet and each of us can make a difference if we choose to do so,” Kerr said. “I am pleased to be a global Ambassador for Earth Hour this year and I personally will be participating in Earth Hour on 26 March 2011, and will continue to adopt sustainability practices thereafter in my everyday life. Together we can make a difference."
Last year, 128 countries took place, with millions switching off their lights for one hour and tomorrow, we're hoping that even more people get involved. To give you a little kick start, we've gathered together five of our favourite Aussie candles, which you can use as a replacement to electricity. Earth Hour commences at 8:30pm TONIGHT. The macadamia nut tree is part of the Proteaceae family of flowering plants and is native to the East coast of Australia, though it is also cultivated in Hawaii, New Caledonia and Indonesia now. Named after John Macadam, the macadamia, or macadamia nut, is also commonly called the Queensland nut, Bush nut, Maroochi nut and Bauple nut. Indigenous names for the species include gyndl and jindilli.
The trees can reach as high as 20m and have glossy leaves, but are most famous for producing the macadamia nut. In fact, they are the only Australian native species that is grown on such a large scale for food. As well as being a popular snack, the macadamia nut and macadamia seed oil (which is obtained by cold-pressing the seeds and then putting them through a refining process to produce a mildly-coloured oil that has a faint odour) are commonplace ingredients in the cosmetics industry because of their conditioning benefits.
