Defined, fuller eyebrows continued to dominate recently at fashion week, securing their place as the beauty trend of the moment. But it seems not everyone is blessed with the thick brow like Cara Delevingne. If genetics aren't on your side or you went to town in your high school years with the tweezers and wax, you might just be in luck! Eyelash and brow growth serums — consisting of polypeptides and essential vitamins — have soared the US market and have recently started making an appearance on the Australian shelves. They've been put to the test and results have proven to enhance overall appearance, reduce breakage, whilst stimulating the natural cycle of hair growth. Simple and quick to apply, with consistency key to getting the most effective results. So with thick, boyish brows not going anywhere, it’s time to get ready to embrace your wild-side. Click Click!
Fashion Week: The Beauty Trends From 2013 MBFWA
Last week at POPSUGAR Beauty, we watched hundreds of models get primped and primed for the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia runways. We spoke to countless hair and makeup artists and watched everything from intricate braiding to lip gloss being applied to eyelids! But a week on, it's time to dissect the beauty trends. Skin was a major player in the backstage beauty stakes, with many designers opting for a more natural makeup look, instead playing up bone structure and shape with contouring. Dewy is out and matte skin is in, but makeup artists still used highlighters to get that "pop" on the runway. There's also some interesting part lines, sexy hair and ethereal eyes. Let's go!
4 Tips to Rock Bold Brows That You Haven't Heard Already
Aside from recently being named the face of Burberry Body Tender, model Cara Delevingne has two other claims to fame: her famously bold eyebrows. Her embracing full brows has spawned a trend that has women contemplating their eyebrow brushes. But if you're a little scared about dusting on some pigment for fear of looking perpetually angry at the world, don't fret. Here are some things to keep in mind while doing up your eyebrows:
- Stick to powders, not pencils. While pencils have usually been the mainstay for brows for generations (hello, '80s makeup), powders are easier to handle and create a more natural, feathered look. Grab two shades: one that is a shade lighter than your natural colour for daytime and one that is a tone darker for more drama.
- Brush powder on your hairs, not your skin. One common mistake women make is that they press on their brushes and pencils too hard, causing pigment to adhere to their skin. This makes brows look clownish and fake. Use a lighter touch to ensure the pigment coats your hairs, not your skin, and always make sure you're brushing in the direction that the hair is growing in.
- Focus pigment on the outer two-thirds of your brows. If putting powder on your brows makes you look clownish, take note at where you're focusing the pigment. Brushing powder into the inner corners of your eyes causes them to look fake. Instead, focus the powder from the beginning of your arch to the end of your brow. Then, using a brow brush, blend the existing pigment into the inner corner for a more natural look.
- Mix your colours. The best way to get a natural look is to blend your colours. Use the darker shade in a thinner line along the centre hairs of your brows. Then blend the lighter shade out from the centre of your brows to the ends. This will ensure you'll always look natural.
2013 Autumn Winter Paris Fashion Week: Chloé
The 2013 Autumn Winter Chloé show revealed softly romantic clothes with a sharp tailoring edge. The hair, created by Anthony Turner, counteracted the soft look, with a masculine shape that still looked natural. Simple boyish ponytails matched thick, strong brows filled-in with shadow. With no statement makeup look to speak of, the skin was flawless thanks to Mac Cosmetics Face and Body Foundation, the lips and nails mute. Click through.
3 Easy Steps to Filling in Sparse Brows
Over-waxing and over-tweezing has happened to the best of us, but with the right techniques, filling in too-sparse brows is a snap. To get tips on how to quickly and easily plump up and shape eyebrows for natural-looking results, just keep reading.
The Icon Kit: Emma Watson's Fun, Feathered Look
There's been plenty of amazing Emma Watson fashion moments we could write about, but this one, from November 2010, is by far our favourite. She'd just cut her hair off following the filming of the final Harry Potter movie, and the world (Sugar included), fell in love all over again. This was the moment that Emma blossomed into a woman, and her Raphael Lopez dress was just perfect. Her legs looked next level — so brown and shiny! — and her wet-look hair was a beauty moment in itself. The whole look is very party and the feathers bring the perfect touch of festive. Wanna copy? Get Jourdan Dunn's Perfectly Angled Brows in 4 Steps
Not everyone has naturally bold arches like model Jourdan Dunn — who showed-off her amazing brows at the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards. But you can fake it until you make it with the help of perfect grooming. Mimic the exact angles of her arches without professional help in four simple steps, and leave the rest to brow filler.
Step 1: Get your mirror in hand and find some flattering natural light, which will help prevent over-plucking. Next, you'll need a long eyebrow brush (or any straight edge). Place the end in a straight line from the side of your nose to the inner corner of your eye and the beginning edge of your eyebrow. Pluck anything that is too far into uni-brow territory.
Step 2: Angle the brush from the edge of your nose towards the outer corner of your eye. This should create a perfect diagonal to the end of your brow. It's likely you won't have to pluck any fine hairs at the tail of your brows, so you can mark the point for perfecting the shape later using a brow pencil.
Step 3: Finally, mark the highest point in your arch. Move the brush to create a diagonal that runs from the edge of the nose through the centre of your iris. This marks the top of the arch.
Step 4: Place the brush horizontally from the front to the end of the brow. This line should be straight. You'll want to pluck stray hairs underneath in a curved fashion, but keep the width of the brow the same throughout with a slight taper at the ends. Keep in mind that the thin and rounded arches are best left in the past.
Why Strong Brows Are a Strong Beauty Statement
You don't have to wear bold colours to make a bold makeup statement. Ginnifer Goodwin looked striking with soft shades of pink paired with stunning arches at last weekend's LACMA 2012 Art + Film Gala. The structured look complemented her sleek pixie and the embellished neckline of her black Gucci dress. She balanced her bold brows with flirty lashes and thin winged liner.
Looking to frame your eyes with full, well-groomed brows, too? Opt for a brow pencil like Kevyn Aucoin Precision Brow Pencil ($39), which features a fine tip to fill in sparse areas or draw a natural looking shape (plus, the brush on the end allows you to groom every hair into place). To achieve more prominent brows, you can exaggerate the shape by slightly elongating the ends. The final touch: set your look with brow gel or wax for a polished finish.
