How to Keep Polish Remover From Drying Out Your Nails

Well-polished fingers can enhance your hands, but the removal process (whether it's with an acetone or acetone-free formula) can quickly dry out your nails and cuticles.

Well-polished fingers can enhance your hands, but the removal process (whether it's with an acetone or acetone-free formula) can quickly dry out your nails and cuticles. The easiest way to lessen the damage is to coat your fingertips with cuticle oil before you even open a bottle of polish remover. Yes, before.

CND's Solar Oil (from $6.95) provides a hydrating blend of vitamin E and almond oils to instantly nourish. Just swipe on and rub in, and then take your polish off. Once you've cleaned up your nails with polish remover, add another dose of cuticle oil to your nails and skin. If you're planning on doing a fresh coat of polish, then just use nail polish remover or alcohol to swipe the nail clean before applying your base coat. And once your polish is in place, give your nails one more shot of cuticle oil for the ultimate in dry-nail prevention.

The Mermaid-Inspired Look You'll Want to Wear

At Monique Lhuillier, the look was all about being under the sea.

At Monique Lhuillier, the look was all about being under the sea. Hair and makeup sought to represent the fluidity of water and all things aquatic.

The look: Turquoise and gold eye makeup, cascading waves, and light lavender nails
The inspiration: Mermaids and ocean waves
Who would wear it: The Little Mermaid — if she climbed onshore and moved to the big city

2012 MBFWA: Gwen Stefani Inspires at We Are Handsome

"It's '40s pin-up girl meets '90s Gwen Stefani," Nicole Thompson (MAC) told us of the We Are Handsome makeup.

"It's '40s pin-up girl meets '90s Gwen Stefani," Nicole Thompson (MAC) told us of the We Are Handsome makeup. The standout was the dual-toned orange and pink lip which was all about the layering according to Thompson. She started with MAC Pro Chromaline in Orange and Pink — "As it's water-resistant, it helps to set the colour," she told us — and then layered up pre-mixed cream lipsticks. Next came orange and pink power Pigments before a final layer of cream lipstick right before the models walked out. The '40s element came through in the brow: " We've given it that structure, we've lifted the arch and that gives it a feminine, almost cat-like feel." Two coats of St Tropez Wash Off Mousse were applied using the applicator mitt and the brand's Bronzing Rocks were dusted over the models' collarbones aarms and legs for a sexy shimmer. For the hair, Kieran Street (TRESemme) wanted to include all three elements of the collection's name: 'The Matriarch, The Enchanted and The Streets'. He put a '40s spin on beachy soft strands using a 1-inch tong to "create almost a water wave, it's texture and movement" before parting hair on the side and making the front sleek. See how the look came together.

2012 MBFWA: Tribal Hair and Pink Eyes at Jenny Kee

"It's a kaleidoscope of pink," Natasha Severino (MAC) said of the eye-catching makeup palette she created for the Jenny Kee show.

"It's a kaleidoscope of pink," Natasha Severino (MAC) said of the eye-catching makeup palette she created for the Jenny Kee show. Giving a nod to Flamingo Park, Kee's old label, Severino used MAC Pink Swoon Blush, Magenta Madness Pigment, Process Magenta Chromagraphic Pencil, Pink Opal Pigment and Fuchsia Pink to create the wash of pink of the eyes. "It's all about different tones and different textures. I'm using matte products to sculpt and add shape and iridescent products to reflect the light. And then clashing that with a red lip." For the hair, Richard Kavangh (Redken) wanted "an organic tribal feel." He created 10 different looks with two different hair bases. One was inspired by an Ethiopian mating ritual and started with a French plait with hair then being twisted around and finally braided before the ends were backcombed. The second base was "traditional African cornrows shaped into a regal beehive." Then flowers, turbans, sticks and branches were added in to finish the looks. Take a look at backstage.
