The Trick to Finding Your Perfect Nude Nail Polish

Nude nail polish is such a huge trend right now, and will be right through until next Spring, but finding the perfect hue to match your skin tone can prove tricky.

Nude nail polish is such a huge trend right now, and will be right through until next Spring, but finding the perfect hue to match your skin tone can prove tricky. There are a variety of flesh-toned polishes that look chic, but which one is right for you? Nail artist Deborah Lippmann has an easy tip for picking your perfect polish. "Our bodies tell us a lot about what colours are right and wrong to wear," Lippmann says. "If you put a colour on, particularly a nude, and it doesn't fit you, your cuticle will look funky." In essence, the colour of your polish will play against the cuticle in a way that will make it look dark or slightly red and ruddy. And while this trick works best for nudes, you can use it with other colours, too.

But what if you fall in love with a shade that doesn't work the first time around? You can still sometimes fudge it. "There's this one shade that I love that doesn't look right on me," Lippmann says. "But if I put a thin layer down, let it dry completely, and then add another thin layer, it looks good." Finding the right system to cheat your polish might take some trial and error, but with a little patience, your perfect nude shade will present itself to you.

A Clever Way to Fix a Smudged Manicure

I often paint my nails at night, so I've woken up plenty of times with sheet imprints on my fresh new manicure.

I often paint my nails at night, so I've woken up plenty of times with sheet imprints on my fresh new manicure. The easiest solution I've discovered is to polish on a glittering top coat. Between the texture of the sparkling flecks and their ability to obscure any smudges, a sparkling top coat pretty much works like magic. My deep plum manicure got plenty of sheet action the night before, so I reached for Essie Luxeffects in Stroke of Brilliance ($18.95) to hide my imperfections. The blue-ish glitter worked perfectly with the shimmering purple polish, but I also keep the silver Essie Luxeffects in Set in Stones ($18.95) and the gold Deborah Lippmann Boom Boom Pow on hand, depending on my polish shade. This quick fix is quite a dazzling option.

Deborah Lippmann Is One of the Girls (as in the HBO Kind)

Want to be one of the Girls?

Want to be one of the Girls? Well, if you're lucky enough to be visiting the US after in mid January, you can capture their essence with the new Deborah Lippmann nail collection inspired by the big-city quartet. The four shades are named after each of the characters on the HBO series: Hannah (hunter green), Marnie (pink), Shoshanna (violet), and Jessa (burgundy). Lena Dunham, creator of the show, has already given the line her nod of approval. "Deborah Lippmann's colours are irreverent and classy and I've always coveted them (and stolen them from my mother), so who better to embody the Girls' spirit in polish form," said Lena. "I've been wearing Hannah like it's going out of style."

This isn't Lippmann's first television collaboration. Earlier this year, she worked with True Blood to create lacquer and lipstick duos inspired by the vampire series. While the Girls-themed polishes don't release until January 15, lucky ducks in the US can preorder the entire set now (USD$45). Stay tuned for the second-season premiere of Girls and as for Lippmann's next collaboration, only time will tell.

The light, airy look took a nod to the geometric shapes in the movie's make-believe backdrop and nails and makeup reflected a similar science-fiction feel. Deborah Lippmann Loves Footloose, Made a New Collection!

The upcoming Footloose remake might not be typical inspiration for luxury nail polish goddess Deborah Lippmann, but she's debuting a hot new set of hues (US$32 for two) that pay homage to both the original film and the new version. "I am a huge fan of the original Footloose, so, admittedly, I was nervous about the idea of a remake of such an iconic film," Lippmann told us. "I just saw the pre-screening of the movie and loved the new version." The four shades all allude to classic moments from the film, and you might already recognise some of the colours. "Almost Paradise is a playful pistachio inspired by the Volkswagen Beetle from the original and the new movie," Lippmann says. "Footloose, a rebellious red, was (of course) inspired by Arielle's iconic red cowboy boots. Let's Hear It For the Boy, the baby blue shade in the collection, was inspired by acid-wash jeans. Gotta love the Levi's, and the way this song is presented in the remake is fantastic! And Dancing in the Sheets, a deep midnight purple shimmer, was inspired by the final hurrah when the ban was lifted and everyone danced all night long with confetti everywhere! I found this so uplifting and inspiring." What do you think?

Three years. That's how long it took manicurist Deborah Lippmann to test, tweak, and perfect the rose-gold nail polish she used for Badgley Mischka's Spring 2012 runway show. Inspired by a fancy-schmancy Rolex, the warm metallic shade, Glamorous Life, added a satin finish to fingertips. A colour this gorgeous, versatile and chic is as suitable for real life as it is on the runway, and it's an absolute steal when compared to a Rolex! Though it debuted during next year's collections, it lands at Stateside stores later this month. We're booking flights now . . .
