Our favourite famous famous gave us many talking points this week. Top of the list? Cara Delevingne, who locked lips with another beautiful English It Girl and made sure to share the resulting pics on Instagram. Also making us sit up and pay attention? The Aussie model who took a unique approach to expressing her opinion on gun laws. . . at the 2013 Met Gala. A wild week it may have been, but it was just as stylish and beautiful as ever. Lara Bingle, Miranda Kerr and Bambi Northwood-Blyth all gave us some behind-the-scenes pics in the makeup chair, Phoebe Tonkin found her wedding dress inspiration (while another celebrity got married in black!), Jennifer Hawkins took a break on a photo shoot and Nicole Richie zoomed in on some gorgeous details (check out those nails!). 2013 MBFWA: Ellery
Kim Ellery is a shape-shifter of sorts — able to swing the style pendulum back to places we thought had had their time — making old look new in the process. Kim really let her formalist aesthetic shine for Spring/Summer '13-'14, presenting a collection full of sculptural shoulder shapes, plus-sized sleeves, super-flare trousers and oversised shells that sat away from the body — seemingly suspended in mid-air, floating centremitres from the figure. Proportion and texture was at play too; narrow column-shaped waistlines giving contrast to the architecturally precise flared sleeves and hemlines while fur and crocodile fabrications upped the luxe quotient. Satin waist-tied tops and jackets worn at the hips relaxed what could be an otherwise stitched-up silhouette, injecting the lineup with a glamous dose of grunge. Dainty, sparse floral prints hinted that Ellery's tough girl troupe had a softer side to show, and the teeny-tiny shorts and structured bodices would come in handy for when some (not too obvious) sex appeal was required.
- Colours: Black, white, and splashes of mustard yellow and silver.
- Trends: Minimalism, front splits, sculptural shapes, lace, sleeveless jackets and flares.
- Key Looks: Flared, printed trousers, lack and white, exagerated sci-fi shoulder shapes and fur.
- Accessories: Fine-strap sandals with nifty over-ankle flared collars and layered jewellery from Petite Grand.
2013 MBFWA: Anti Hair For An Outlaw Beauty at Ellery
Leave it to Kym Ellery to not only have the awesome model threesome that is Julia Nobis, Hanne Gaby Odiele and Ruby Jean Wilson; but she also went with a rebellious, outlaw hair and beauty look. Napoleon Perdis wanted the makeup to look milky and clean, but barely there. St. Tropez used a lengthening illuminator trick on arms and legs, while Toni & Guy Hair Meet Wardrobe channelled Joan Jett and iconic one-time model and designer, Anita Pallenberg. This is very cool, hop in.
Lara Bingle Gets MBFWA Started With Aussie Fashion Identities and International Bloggers
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia 2013 launches today, and this morning a gathering of high profile Australian fashion identities and international blogger guests was held at Carriageworks in Sydney to kick off the week-long event. Five key players in the Australian fashion industry have been paired with visiting stars as part of a NSW Fashion Ambassador program that was initiated by Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner — Lara Bingle with Jak & Jil blogger/photographer Tommy Ton, Kym Ellery with Bryanboy blogger Bryan Yambao, Romance Was Born designers Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales with Susie Bubble, Tuula Vintage blogger Jessica Stein with Style From Tokyo blogger Rei Shito, and RUSSH magazine editor Jess Blanch with Who What Wear co-founder Hillary Kerr.
Lara told the Sunday Telegraph of her assigned guest, “I’m a big fan of his Jak & Jil blog and I want to take him to Cafe Sydney and the MCA.” She also revealed that she postponed a trip to Thailand to be part of the program, and that she’ll be popping up at many MBFWA shows to support her friends in the fashion industry.

Celebrity Candids: See What Miranda, Karl, Rosie & more got up to this week
Between the slew of award shows and big red-carpet events, it was a busy week for some of our favourite style and beauty setters. We got a glimpse of the one and only Karl Lagerfeld on set at a photo shoot, and hung out with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Lana Del Rey and Jaime King at the Golden Globes after-party. Doutzen Kroes sipped on a fresh coconut from where we'd rather be, and Aussie Isabelle Cornish made us wanna wear anything camouflage with her cool take on the trend. Zooey Deschanel's nails were incredible and Nicole Richie's detailing stunning, but the picture that got the most attention on social media this week? Miranda Kerr's Golden Globes selfie. Check it all out right here!
Fashion Week Has A New Home for 2013: Carriageworks, Sydney
When we received an invitation from IMG with a secret location, we knew something was up. Yesterday morning our 10am meet-point was revealed via email, and with it the suggestion that Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia had found a new home. Sydney's Carriageworks in Redfern will play host to next year's fashion week festivities, and run on a new schedule - from April 8th to April 12th, 2013. An extended trade show and exhibition programme called PREMIERE will run concurrently with the traditional BFWA schedule, combining "the existing Designer Suite Program and AEC’s Premiere exhibitor inventory to extend the opportunity for new Spring/Summer wholesale collections to be sold directly to registered buyers of both events, and is likely to increase local and international buyer attendance," according to IMG.
Regarding the new earlier time (fashion week is usually held during the end of April/first week of May), Elle Persson, the director of strategy and brand development for IMG said, "The new calendar for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia allows designers time to deliver a collection ready for the runway, maximise media attention and increase domestic sales opportunities. This date also ensures high profile international exposure aligning with the global fashion event calendar.”
What do you think of the new move? Before having your say, step inside to get a glimpse of the floor plans and designers on deck for MBFWA 2013.
Label to Look Out For: Kym Ellery Steers L'America's Stylish Debut
Anything that Kym Ellery does is usually a-ok by us. Sculptural LBDs (of her own design) on the red carpet? Heck, yes. Those now iconic catseye sunglasses? We own every colourway. So when we heard that the Sydney-based designer had lent her well-honed eye to new local label L'America, we looked closer. Think ready-to-wear pieces that were made for festival-filled hazy days and street-to-beach inspired separates, with prices ranging between $49 and $190. Of her new creative director role Kym said, "L'America is a label with a fresh youthful energy. I am thrilled to be asked to oversee the creative direction of the brand and it is so exciting to be working on a project separate to Ellery." Not only did she steer the new label in the right direction, but Ms Ellery shot the debut campaign, too. With Kym at the helm, we feel this might be a brand you'll want to know about sooner rather than later. See it in stores nationally at David Jones.
