Hairdresser Etiquette 101: How to Better Prepare For the Chair

We've all been there — standing on the street with a fresh cut and colour that looks nothing like we envisaged or the picture we presented.
Tips From a Hairdresser on How to Get the Perfect Cut and Colour

We've all been there — standing on the street with a fresh cut and colour that looks nothing like we envisaged or the picture we presented. We said Alexa Chung's choppy crop and walked out with something resembling The Rachel, circa 1994. We're upset and we kind of want to cry, but there's no way in hell we're going to walk back in and actually tell the hairdresser we hate it. Besides, maybe it will grown on us? Or maybe we can go home and wash it. Then straighten it. Then tie it up. If you've been in a similar situation, our bet is you spent a lot of money and time in the chair acquiring that hair, so we decided to quiz Original A's colour director, Wayne Lewis, about all things hairdresser etiquette. What can we do to better prepare ourselves for a visit to the salon? And, what should we say if we don't want that $50 blow dry at the end? Come on!

Were Lara's Locks the Reason She Was Voted Off DWTS?

We're bidding a sad farewell to Lara Bingle who was voted off Dancing With The Stars last night after harsh criticism from Todd McKenney on how her blonde locks were constantly hanging in front of her face.

We're bidding a sad farewell to Lara Bingle who was voted off Dancing With The Stars last night after harsh criticism from Todd McKenney on how her blonde locks were constantly hanging in front of her face. He said, "I think one of the reasons you don't have the X Factor is because I can never see your face . . . you're like Cousin It on the dance floor. I can't see your expression." Lara has her own makeup artist on the show, bestie Max May, but said she "likes her hair like this . . . it's something I feel comfortable with." Although she's used that as her reasoning, we've seen her work a plethora of slicked-back up 'dos on the red carpet, showing off her naturally gorgeous features. Whaddya think peeps — was Todd a little harsh, or do you think her loose waves detracted from her performance?

Max May Talks Through Lara Bingle's DWTS Hair & Makeup!

She wowed the judges with her skills on the dance floor, coming second only to chef and My Kitchen Rules judge Manu, but it was Lara Bingle's beauty look that caught our eye on Dancing With the Stars last night.

She wowed the judges with her skills on the dance floor, coming second only to chef and My Kitchen Rules judge Manu, but it was Lara Bingle's beauty look that caught our eye on Dancing With the Stars last night. Managing to avoid the potential pitfalls that can go hand-in-hand with the genre of the show — think too-tan tans, super-spidery lash lines and the like — Lara looked gorgeous as she took to the floor to perform the Viennese Waltz. We spoke to Max May, her bestie and makeup artist, who was behind her "glamorous and movie star-ish" look.

He told us that he wanted Lara to look as "modern as possible," in keeping with her usual effortless style. As Max says, "Her style of hair and makeup is so heavily recognised, it's important to keep that feeling and personality there." This meant Max "rough-dried Lara’s hair using bumble and bumble thickening spray ($50)," then tonged it, using L’Oreal Elnett hairspray ($9.95) to hold the wave. After Lara's hair cooled, Max backcombed it to add some texture and volume, before brushing it out, finishing up with Wella Ocean Sprizz sea salt spray ($23.50) "to give a worn, slightly slept-in look."
