Week after week, we're inundated with pictures of gorgeous celebrities trying out new beauty trends and hairstyles. This week was no exception, and picking out a top 10 was no mean feat! But when it came down to it, we had to pick which hair and makeup adventures we actually wanted to copy ourselves. And between lovely Lara Bingle's dramatic cat-eye flick, formed to perfection, Jennifer Hawkins' beach-to-bar waves and Frieda Pinto's barely-there lip colour and smoky eye (and more!), we have plenty cool new trends to try. Keen to see them for yourself? Come along!
What's more Australian than a gorgeous girl leaving the beach with sexy, salty, textured hair? We say: nothing. With Australia Day fast approaching (um, it's tomorrow), we've got your nails covered and your fun outfit sorted out nicely, but the easiest way to amp up your Summer sex appeal and overall cool-girl beauty look is by spritzing a good quality sea salt spray through your locks. A few of us here at Sugar are big fans at the stuff, so we've tried and tested most of these. And let us tell you, they've got the goods. They don't weigh your hair down or leave it looking greasy, and they actually give you that sexy hair you've always wanted — think Lara Bingle, Sienna Miller and Jodi Gordon. Click through to see which ones we recommend, then spritz your way into your Oz Day delecbrations!
As one of Sydney's most in-demand hairdressers, Original A's Alan Buki has Melbourne Cup and Spring racing hair on the brain. He knows only too well that when it comes to wearing a bold fascinator or daring hat, it's important the hairstyle you choose complements the piece — rather than compete with it. Alan says there's five classic hairstyles as seen on stars including Blake Lively and Olivia Palermo that won't let you down on the big day, so click through.
We've all been there — standing on the street with a fresh cut and colour that looks nothing like we envisaged or the picture we presented. We said Alexa Chung's choppy crop and walked out with something resembling The Rachel, circa 1994. We're upset and we kind of want to cry, but there's no way in hell we're going to walk back in and actually tell the hairdresser we hate it. Besides, maybe it will grown on us? Or maybe we can go home and wash it. Then straighten it. Then tie it up. If you've been in a similar situation, our bet is you spent a lot of money and time in the chair acquiring that hair, so we decided to quiz Original A's colour director, Wayne Lewis, about all things hairdresser etiquette. What can we do to better prepare ourselves for a visit to the salon? And, what should we say if we don't want that $50 blow dry at the end? Come on!
Our favourite Aussie blonde, Lara Bingle, is taking her signature messy locks darker. She posted a picture of her newly darkened hair to her Instagram account earlier this week, so we went straight to her hairdresser Jaye Edwards to find out how he made it happen. Going from a really cool, icy blonde, to a darker golden colour can be tricky, find out the steps Jaye took and what products he uses on Lara's hair after the break.
We're bidding a sad farewell to Lara Bingle who was voted off Dancing With The Stars last night after harsh criticism from Todd McKenney on how her blonde locks were constantly hanging in front of her face. He said, "I think one of the reasons you don't have the X Factor is because I can never see your face . . . you're like Cousin It on the dance floor. I can't see your expression." Lara has her own makeup artist on the show, bestie Max May, but said she "likes her hair like this . . . it's something I feel comfortable with." Although she's used that as her reasoning, we've seen her work a plethora of slicked-back up 'dos on the red carpet, showing off her naturally gorgeous features. Whaddya think peeps — was Todd a little harsh, or do you think her loose waves detracted from her performance?
Lara Bingle turns 24 today, so we're taking a look back at her beauty looks over the years. The beach blonde from the Shire appeared on our radar back in 2006 as the face of Tourism Australia and we've seen her grow up in the spotlight, perfecting her elegant and effortless style over the years. With plans to pen a beauty book alongside bestie and makeup artist Max May, she's pulling off plenty of style switcheroo's as she tears up the dancefloor on Dancing With The Stars. Happy birthday!
She wowed the judges with her skills on the dance floor, coming second only to chef and My Kitchen Rules judge Manu, but it was Lara Bingle's beauty look that caught our eye on Dancing With the Stars last night. Managing to avoid the potential pitfalls that can go hand-in-hand with the genre of the show — think too-tan tans, super-spidery lash lines and the like — Lara looked gorgeous as she took to the floor to perform the Viennese Waltz. We spoke to Max May, her bestie and makeup artist, who was behind her "glamorous and movie star-ish" look.
He told us that he wanted Lara to look as "modern as possible," in keeping with her usual effortless style. As Max says, "Her style of hair and makeup is so heavily recognised, it's important to keep that feeling and personality there." This meant Max "rough-dried Lara’s hair using bumble and bumble thickening spray ($50)," then tonged it, using L’Oreal Elnett hairspray ($9.95) to hold the wave. After Lara's hair cooled, Max backcombed it to add some texture and volume, before brushing it out, finishing up with Wella Ocean Sprizz sea salt spray ($23.50) "to give a worn, slightly slept-in look."
