2012 Met Costume Institute Gala: Best Dressed

THIS is a hard one, so we need your help.

THIS is a hard one, so we need your help. There were so many fantastic fashion looks on show at the 2012 Met Gala, that we can't decide which well-dressed attendee deserves the best dressed award. So... we are asking for your expert opinions! Gwyneth Paltrow floored us with her chic Prada halter, but then again Emily Blunt's Calvin Klein sheath ranked pretty high in the chic stakes, too. Beyoncé and Kate Bosworth both worked the feathered trend, in Givenchy and Prada respectively. Then there was the cutie-patootie battle between Carey Mulligan who got all avant-garde on us in a gold-silver Prada frock, and Ginnifer Goodwin whose Monique Lhuillier tangerine dream knocked us for six. Tell us who you think was the Met Gala's best dressed!

The Top Red Carpet Trends from the 2012 Met Gala Red Carpet: Peplums, Metallics, Backless, Feathers + More!

It's time to break down the top red carpet trends from the 2012 Met Gala red carpet. Metallics might have been the big story of the night, with Karolina Kurkova stunning in a slim-fitting gown and matching turban courtesy of Rachel Zoe, Michael Kors dressing Jessica Alba like a golden goddess, and Camilla Belle looking every bit the '20s siren in Ralph Lauren. There were also plenty of plumes, from Diane Kruger's purple Prada gown to Kate Bosworth's flirty Prada dress. It continues to be the year of the peplum, while the next big trend in sexy dresses appears to be all about showing some sexy back — case in point, Rihanna. Don't forget about the orange crush, textural play and feather fetish we spotted, too! So many trends, so little time. Step inside to start your Met Gala red carpet revision.

A trend that we've been banging on about for you to try out for Winter has slipped up the fashion hierarchy, and is having a major influence on red carpet looks, in particular today's glam 2012 Met Gala offerings. Texture, and not in the faux fur variety, was all over the red rug — a myriad of guises. Rihanna wore an alligator stamped Tom Ford sheath, Leighton Meester experimented with Marchesa tulle, Rooney Mara contrasted leather with lace in Givenchy, Carey Mulligan worked a metallic fish-scaled Prada number and Cate Blanchett was feathered head-to-toe courtesy of Alexander McQueen. Take a gander at the plethora of way celebrities incorporated this tactile trend into their Met Gala looks.

2012 Met Costume Institute Gala Trend: Tangerine Dream

We pointed out earlier the number of yellow frocks on the Met Gala's red carpet today, but out in equal force was a similarly citrus-influenced showing of orange.

We pointed out earlier the number of yellow frocks on the Met Gala's red carpet today, but out in equal force was a similarly citrus-influenced showing of orange. From almost -eds to peachy sunset shades to crayola brights, it was all coming up rather Fanta flavoured. From Ginnifer Goodwin in elegant Monique Lhuillier to Emma Roberts in a sweet belted Escada number, the stars were keen to adopt the spritzy palette. We particularly liked Eva Mendes tangerine-y dress, which played off the bold colourway with large-scale beading in contrasting hues. Edges were hemmed in pretty plumes, adding touch-me intrigue whilst keeping things light and soft. Beyoncé made a dramatic entrance with her violet, ombre-effect Givenchy train, Diane Kruger similarly wore purple, but in a way boho-inspired Prada way. Cate Blanchett went a darker route in a noir Alexander McQueen feather-edged gown whilst Kate Bosworth put a flirty twist on the trend with her short, flapper-esque Prada shift. 2012 Met Costume Institute Gala: Emily Blunt

Emily Blunt looked pretty in pink, but in a distinctly modern way at today's Met Gala.

Emily Blunt looked pretty in pink, but in a distinctly modern way at today's Met Gala. The British actress opted for a brightly hued Calvin Klein gown, but countered any possible saccharine overtones with a sleek, fitted silhouette and sexy side splicing and a low back. A silver box clutch and bejewelled bracelet add the prerequisite touch of bling. We think the lack of frills makes this one of chicest looks of the day, how about you?

If anyone was wondering where Renee Zellweger has been as of late — here she is, making a gorgeous grand entrance in Emilio Pucci. While we don't envy her walk up the Met's stairs, it was more than just a little fun to get an all-angles look at that chiffon-and-organza ruffled train. The Bridget Jones actress, soon-to-be reprising her role for the third installment, was able to show off her famously sculpted arms and back in the dress's sheer panel-detailed bodice. To finish, she accessorized with decadent diamond drop earrings and one solitaire cocktail ring. How do you think she did?

2012 Met Costume Institute Gala: Christini Ricci

Christina Ricci brought new meaning to being bow-tied in a showstopping Thakoon gown.

Christina Ricci brought new meaning to being bow-tied in a showstopping Thakoon gown. Aside from an intricate lattice-worked bodice and a flash of midriff, all eyes were on Christina's dramatic sculptural neckline that ends in a floor-skimming bow at the back. There's no competing with this kind of adornment — Christina keeps the rest simple with a single sparkly cocktail ring and a pair of classic black pumps. It's safe to say this is one of the night's most attention-grabbing looks — what do you think?
