The 2013 Cleo Bachelor of the Year was revealed last night with a “shock” result that saw 21-year-old Bondi Rescue lifeguard Trent “Maxi” Maxwell take home the title. Many had expected The Voice host Darren McMullen to win, even the magazine’s editor Sharri Markson, who told us, “Sportsbet shut down the betting because they thought Darren McMullen was the clear winner, and I assumed the same thing because he’s the most famous out of the list. So when the voting shut off [on Tuesday] night and we got the results this morning, I couldn’t have been more surprised.” She did add about Maxi, “He’s not your traditional model bachelor but he’s a gorgeous person and definitely deserves to win it.” The most surprised person may have been Maxi, who was only planning to drop into the party so he could head to his own fundraising event on the same night. He stayed at Cleo’s party longer than planned but used his acceptance speech to raise more awareness about the causes he’s passionate about.
Maxi said, “Thanks guys for all your support. I didn’t really expect this — there are good blokes around me . . . As much as this is all cool, I’m going to be doing a big thing in September. I’ll be riding a jet ski from Sydney to Cairns with one of the other lifeguards. In our job we do deal with some heavy situations. Unfortunately a lot of people take their lives around the beaches, and not many people know that. A lot of the obituaries I’ve done have been under the age of 30, and I thought I want to do something about it, so I’m going to jump on a jet ski and drive 3,000km up the east coast and make a film about mental health and suicide prevention.” The $10,000 cheque he took home will also go towards making that film.
Darren, who arrived late and was the only Bachelor out of uniform, was still awarded third place, while the runner-up was ‘wildcard’ entrant Matthew Witkowski, a scientist from Melbourne who does research for children’s cancer. Scott Tweedie had a lot of love from the crowd, most notably from his The Loop co-host Ash London and MTV VJ Kate Peck, who shared emcee duties with Sharri at last night’s party. After the formalities were over, Samantha Jade hit the stage for three songs, and the Bachelors mingled with single females in the crowd and enjoyed the night’s circus-themed festivities.
