I think we’ve talked about the big, high bun enough to know that (aside from braids) it’s one of our favourite hairstyles and a winner when you need a quick up-do. If you still haven’t mastered it yet, you’re in luck, as Jacen Ward from The Creative Group shared his top tips for a style like Olivia Palermo’s . . .
STEP 1: Prepare the hair by blow-drying with Goldwell Inner Effect Repower Root Lift Spray ($27.95) to give body and shine.
STEP 2: Softly brush hair back into a high pony and secure with a tie.
STEP 3: Use Inner Effect Repower Hairspray ($27.95) to smooth any fly-aways around the hair line. Then wrap the hair around, twisting it slightly. Make sure you hide the hair tie.
STEP 4: Secure with bobby pins all the way around the chignon.
STEP 5: Finish with the Goldwell Styling Radiant Star ($20.95) to give your hair a brilliant shine.
And voilà! There you have it. A beautiful, simple and classic look.
Us Sugar girls have been fans of super-stylish Olivia Palermo ever since she graced our screens in The City, so we were green with envy to hear that FabUK ran in to her at London Fashion Week. Interestingly, she was really lovely and nothing like the character she's portrayed as on TV.
Olivia was in town to celebrate the launch of her new short film which is a showcase of Matches' in-house label, Freda, and features Liv dancing around a bedroom trying on clothes. At the movie launch, this is what she said of her beauty routine . . .
You always have flawless makeup; what are your favourite brands? I LOVE Guerlain makeup. I love that it's an old company. The makeup is super soft too and the shades they do are great.
Tell us about your beauty routine. Do you spend a lot of time getting ready? You know, it's really funny. I’m actually very easy-going. People assume I’m this super high-maintenance person but I’m not at all. I throw it on and I go out.
Mention the name Christopher Bailey and a whole gaggle of A-list girls seem to come-a-runnin'. That was the moral of the story yesterday when, wait for it, Claire Danes, Kate Hudson, Mary-Kate Olsen, Kristen Stewart, Mia Wasikowska, Olivia Palermo and Twiggy showed up front row at A/W '10 Burberry Prorsum. Is it wrong to enjoy the front row more than the runway? Not that I didn't like the elegant and effortless hair which is easy to recreate with the help of a trusty low chignon, let it loose just before you walk out the front door and voila: naturally glamorous tousle. Mr. B also has his butt firmly on the good skin bandwagon. It's set to be the focal point of your A/W look so try (my fave) Perricone MD No Foundation Foundation ($98) or invest in Bobbi Brown's new Natural Finish Long Lasting Foundation SPF15 ($75) come April.
Question: where might you find a model wearing a badger's head? At Topshop Unique's A/W 2010 collection. Taking hair accessories to, for want of a better word, unique new heights, A/W 2010 will apparently be the time to pop on that fox's hat or those deer antlers. Riiiiight . . . Models with golden faces greeted front rowers like Alexa Chung, Peaches and Pixie Geldof and Olivia Palermo. And whilst I can assure you that I won't be sporting a hobbit-style monobrow, I just might extend that gold pigment to the inner V of my eyes, tops of my cheekbones, cupids bow and centre of my lip. A girl's gotta take something from this look, doncha think?
On Tuesday night, at the You Know You Want It book launch in NYC, Olivia Palermo arrived on the red carpet with a new red tint through her hair. Those perfect honey-toned highlights of hers—which suited her better than ultra-blonde, I thought—that everybody coveted have been gradually getting darker but this is the first sign of scarlet creeping in. What do you think, red hot or not? Which shade is your favourite on the stylish The Citystar?
OK, OK, I know the whole point of these is to actually make a decision about something, but lip colour was just too hard this year. It started at the Emmys when stars got embroiled in a red vs. nude-off and we sat on the fence because we could see the perks of both colours. Here are just a few stars showing us how they rocked a racy red (clockwise from top left: Drew Barrymore; Chloë Sevigny; Hayden Panettiere and Alexa Chung) and nude neutral (clockwise from top right: Toni Collette; Olivia Palermo; Ginnifer Goodwin and January Jones) in 2009. I challenge thee not to love both.
Runners up: Brick red (Anne Hathaway declared herself a fan, as did Daisy Lowe) and pink, in all its watermelon/raspberry glory.
The City star Olivia Palermo played it a little safe and maybe even a tad too grown-up on the red carpet tonight. Her long hair was swept back into a low, side chignon that, while elegant, seems more appropriate for the Oscars than it does the VMAs. Her makeup takes it up a notch, especially those long lashes. She highlighted her eyes with a deep silver shadow and perfectly plucked brows. Standard pink cheeks and lips completed the look. What say you, am I being too harsh on Olivia, or would you have preferred more oomph?
