With Rock of Ages opening today, we got to thinking about some of the more recent movie adaptations of musicals — those from 1980 on (sorry, Grease). Though there are purists who will always prefer Broadway, a lot of shows have inspired entertaining, sometimes even award-worthy, movies, like Hairspray, Chicago, and Dreamgirls. With a star-studded cast and perhaps the most unlikely frontman, Rock of Ages hits cinemas today. Adapted for the screen from the musical of the same name, country girl Sherrie Christian (Julianne Hough) falls for city boy Drew Boley (Diego Boneta) in LA on her quest for singing stardom. A nail-polish-and-eyeliner wearing Tom Cruise stars as Stacee Jaxx — lead singer of glam rock band Arsenal — who announces he's to split from his band but will play one last time... The remaining all-star cast includes Russell Brand, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Paul Giamatti, Malin Åkerman, Bryan Cranston, Alec Baldwin and Mary J. Blige. Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta and the whole Rock of Ages gang premiered their movie in London on Sunday night. The UK screening came after the LA event for Rock of Ages on Friday that brought out a Hollywood crowd including Zac Efron, Josh Duhamel and writer Justin Theroux. Tom posed for photos with co-stars Mary J. Blige, Russell Brand and Paul Giamatti, as well as director Adam Shankman. Some of their co-stars didn't make the trek to Britain, like Alec Baldwin and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Still, it seems like Tom, Julianne and company were excited to be in London. Upon her arrival, Julianne tweeted, "Love being here . . . Feels like home." Adam, meanwhile, seemed to be quite the royalist. He wrote, "Loving London . . . Scavenging for jubilee mementos!"
Julianne Hough took some fashion risks over the week in two bold-coloured dresses for the Rock of Ages premieres in LA and Miami — and we think it totally paid off. She channeled her inner rock star in a figure-hugging blue leather minidress by Milly, and we really like this edgier style on Julianne. The cast of Rock of Ages hit the red carpet on Friday night for the film's premiere, and we couldn't stop staring at Julianne Hough! We loved her bright dress, but it is her cute topknot we're coveting. She wore the style messy and started with a diagonal braid along the top of her hair, leading into the bun. The bun itself sat slightly to the left, which gave her look a really cute, undone look. The key to a great topknot — or even a braid — is creating volume and texture before you start styling. While most big premieres happen mid-week, this one was enough of a party to merit the Friday night spot. The trio, with Julianne standing out in her bright yellow dress, were joined by other costars including Russell Brand and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Josh Duhamel dressed the part in a long wig and no shirt with Fergie by his side while Zac Efron kept it casual to check out the scene. Jennifer Aniston's boyfriend Justin Theroux wrote the screenplay for Rock of Ages and he was looking dapper in a sleek suit, though he didn't have Jen on his arm for the arrivals. Aniston did look sexy in white for an event to honour Shirley MacLaine the night before. Also without a date was Tom Cruise, whose wife Katie Holmes is currently in Asia for her own work obligations.
Welcome to Winter. One of the best things about the next few months (if you can get past the cold) is that it’s Summer blockbuster season in the US, which means lots of exciting movie releases for us to catch at the cinema with popcorn, a hot chocolate, or whatever your cinema snack of choice is. This month we get a double dose of Charlize Theron in two of the most highly anticipated films of the year, a Bridesmaids cast reunion of sorts in a new comedy, and some animated flicks to warm your heart.
With a heads up from Pop, we're looking forward to the coming season's onslaught of silver-screen blockbusters and indie films and, of course, the inspiring movie fashion that comes with them. Specifically, we're dying to see what Penelope Cruz will be wearing (aside from that sexy little red minidress) in Woody Allen's To Rome With Love, how Michelle Williams could possibly make us fall in love with her laid-back gamine style even more in Take This Waltz, or what Chloë Moretz's '70s ensembles will look like in Tim Burton's zany Dark Shadows. Just like our affinity for small screen style, we love watching our favourite celebs transform into their onscreen characters, wardrobe 'n' all! If you're a fan of the Rock of Ages musical, you might find yourself cheering and clapping along with the trailer for the big screen version of the show. If you're like me (who has never seen the show), then you might be a little more confused as to what this movie is actually about. The preview does a fine job of playing up its selling points: there's a huge cast (that features Alec Baldwin, Tom Cruise, Russell Brand and Catherine Zeta-Jones) and tons of familiar '80s rock tunes (like "Any Way You Want It" and "We're Not Gonna Take It"). Other than that, all that we can glean is that Baldwin's character owns a club and Zeta-Jones is determined to take it down.
Apparently, the real story here is about Diego Boneta's character's rise to fame, and his puppy love story with Julianne Hough. But Boneta is barely even seen in the trailer, and instead, it's mostly about Tom Cruise as a sex symbol rock star. I'm not sure this has the makings of a great film, but it did succeed in one respect: I'll most definitely be humming Journey songs for the rest of the day.
