Fashion Week: The Beauty Trends From 2013 MBFWA

Last week at POPSUGAR Beauty, we watched hundreds of models get primped and primed for the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia runways.

Last week at POPSUGAR Beauty, we watched hundreds of models get primped and primed for the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia runways. We spoke to countless hair and makeup artists and watched everything from intricate braiding to lip gloss being applied to eyelids! But a week on, it's time to dissect the beauty trends. Skin was a major player in the backstage beauty stakes, with many designers opting for a more natural makeup look, instead playing up bone structure and shape with contouring. Dewy is out and matte skin is in, but makeup artists still used highlighters to get that "pop" on the runway. There's also some interesting part lines, sexy hair and ethereal eyes. Let's go!

2013 MBFWA: Geometric Lines & Crimson, Murano Glass Lips at Lisa Ho

Lisa Ho's Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia show was always going to be a goodie in the makeup department, thanks to Mac Cosmetics queen, Val Garland.

Lisa Ho's Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia show was always going to be a goodie in the makeup department, thanks to Mac Cosmetics queen, Val Garland. Val worked on the sublime Romance Was Born makeup look on Monday night, and she brings her signature flare to Lisa Ho. She wanted the dark, crimson lip to have life and depth — much like the swirls seen in murano glass — while the rest of the face is contoured. Ghd's Alan White impressed with hair, taking inspiration from the Helmut Newton power woman. More custom-mixed lips and even some midnight blue hairpieces. It's day three — let's go!

2013 Fall NYFW: Eyeliner as Lip Colour Lends an Edgy Vibe at 3.1 Phillip Lim

Done up in ruddy-hued lips and strands styled with just a touch of texture, the models at 3.1 Phillip Lim were urban girls with a bit of an edge.

Done up in ruddy-hued lips and strands styled with just a touch of texture, the models at 3.1 Phillip Lim were urban girls with a bit of an edge. And in order to capture that sexy, naughty, dangerous vibe, Frédéric Fekkai lead stylist Paul Hanlon ensured models' hair texture was not too precise. But it was a reddish-brown lip look, conceptualised by makeup artist Francelle Daly for Nars, which really brought this down-town girl notion to life. All that was missing? A rocker boyfriend.

The Dos and Don'ts of Acing the Moody Lip Trend

While dark, moody lipstick is always a popular look, this season more women are warming up to the dramatic trend.

While dark, moody lipstick is always a popular look, this season more women are warming up to the dramatic trend. Celebrities have been popping up along the red carpet sporting berry- and wine-hued lipsticks, and they've paired them with everything from subtly smoky eye shadow to sexy winged eyeliner. Since there are so many shades that fall within the "dark lip" spectrum, this look is surprisingly simple to pull off. Check out the dos and don'ts of the moody lip:

  • Do keep your face simple: Deep lipstick shades conflict with heavy bronzer and blush, so make sure to keep those to a minimum. Conceal, apply a light line of bronzer from the top of your ear to the bottom of your lip, and then dust on a touch of blush to the apples of your cheeks.
  • Don't be afraid of dark eye makeup: Celebrities have been spotted wearing the moody lip with dark eyeliner, and this lipstick hue actually complements dark eye shadow. Go full-on dramatic with a smoky eye, or pair it with a thin liner for daytime — like Lara Bingle.
  • Do use lip liner: This will help your lipstick stay put. Line the perimeter of your lips as usual with a similarly shaded lipstick. Then, use the liner to fill in about halfway down both your top and bottom lips before swiping on your lipstick.
  • Don't skimp on concealer: If you stuff-up your lip liner or lipstick, don't try to wipe it off — it will only smear it and make it worse. Instead, use a concealer brush and some concealer to cover up any mistakes. Swiping the concealer on around your lips will also help define them, drawing more attention to your vampy lip colour.
