The Hills wrapped a long time ago, but Lauren Conrad has reinvented herself into a successful young business woman. She's written books — including one about beauty — and designed clothes, making her one of the most well-respected young things in Hollywood today. It's Lauren's 27th birthday today, so we thought we'd take a little trip down memory lane, right back to her Laguna Beach days and check out her beauty files. From beach babe to balayaged beauty, the TV star-turned-author has inspired many-a-beauty look. Hottie.
Happy 29th Birthday, Alexa Chung!
Happy Birthday Alexa! Our favourite Brit model-turned-TV-presenter-turned-designer became a worldwide style icon pretty much as soon as she chopped her locks back in August 2007— it was her very own Linda Evangelista moment. Everyone sat up and took notice of this naturally gorgeous girl who's become as famous for her winged eye — "The only make-up technique I’ve managed to master,"— and slightly dishevelled hair as she has for her finger-on-the-pulse style choices. Whether she's rocking some heavily-rimmed kohl eyes, a red lip or that signature wing, she always manages to look effortless, edgy and elegant all at once. Check out her transformation from Westlife video star to big time icon in our celebratory birthday gallery.
Learn How to Paint Sun-Kissed Balayage Highlights at Home
Balayage is a beautiful, natural looking take on highlights (thanks to the French), but better yet, the technique is easy to try at home. Check out the steps necessary for channeling your inner colorist, and impress your friends with your DIY efforts. Sun-kissed, buttery-blond strands await.
2011 MTV Movie Awards: Leighton Meester

Leighton Meester also rocked a slate grey eye, taking lead from her metallic embellished dress. Topped off with a peach lip, we also noticed that Leighton's lightened up her locks, joining the ombré effect hair trend that was huge in Hollywood last year. Even though Leighton's a little late to the party, it's nice to see her switch up her style and return (albeit partially) to her roots — Leighton's a natural blonde. What do you think of her new hairstyle? And makeup?

On Silver Tides: Vanessa Picks Metallics For Pirates Premiere!

She's normally all about the kohl-lined eye, but for the Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides premiere in Disneyland on Saturday Vanessa Hudgens worked a metallic makeup palette along with her new ombré-effect strands. Coating the brow bone in an iridescent white, Vanessa's lid and beneath the lower lash line were rimmed with silver shadow, before lining the eye with kohl and finishing off with mascara and a quarter lash for added drama. She topped off the look with a gunmetal polish, save for her ring finger which was painted a teal green. We've seen the polish thing before on Vanessa and the makeup was similar to her Vanity Fair Oscars after party look — sans the berry lip. Do you like it when Vanessa mixes her metallics or would you like to see something new from the Disney darling?
Hilary Duff Goes Back to Blonde! Is It Her Best Hair Hue?

Hilary Duff is such a little colour chameleon when it comes to her hair! Hils walked the red carpet for the LA premiere of Soul Surfer this week with newly blonde hair (to match her newly-gotten bangs). This is typically how we remember her looking from her days on Lizzie McGuire, but since then she's played around with super dark, then kind of reddish and led the charge on the insanely popular ombré effect look, where she had dark roots and lighter ends. Hilary's gorgeous girl so all three hair hues suit her flawless complexion, but is it blonde best?
2010 Biggest Hair Trend: Balayage or Ombré Highlights

WINNER: Balayage or ombré highlights
It's not a new trend, having been around since '07/'08 but the ombré effect — aka balayage or grown-out highlights — was big news this year with heaps of celebs, including Rachel Bilson, Drew Barrymore, Jessica Biel, Hilary Duff, Lauren Conrad and Ashlee Simpson-Wentz lightening their ends. They were led by Queen Bee of this trend, Alexa Chung and joined by Aussies Rose Byrne, Jen Hawkins and Caitlin Stasey. Yay for the lazy-girl's guide to good hair.
All Are Sexy, But Who Has the Sexiest Hair: Jess, Jen or Nat?

A bevy of home-grown hotties made Who's annual Sexiest People list but it was Packed to the Rafters actress Jessica Marais, Myer ambassador Jennifer Hawkins and X Factor judge Natalie Imbruglia that landed the cover. The girls look smokin' hot — check it out, you could cut ice with them cheekbones! (Note to self: up the contouring ante; stat.) The girls looked like they had a great time on the shoot — who wouldn't, hanging on a boat in the sun with your besties — but it comes down to this: who has the sexiest hair? Are you a fan of Jess' blonde locks? How do you feel about Jen's balayage? Maybe you're a fan of Nat's espresso strands?
Jess and the Olsens Par-Tay For WWD's 100th Birthday Bash!
The fashion, celeb and beauty worlds joined forces in NYC last night to help WWD celebrate a milestone: turning 100 in style! Which is no mean feat!
Amongst the crème de la crème of design talent was Gossip Girl's Jessica Szohr, who was a regular at NYFW, the Olsens who both went for shockingly similar hair and makeup styles, gorgeous redhead Karon Elson (who hasn't said much about stealing Christina Hendricks' look), Aussie model Nicole Trunfio, shoe-queen-turned-fragrance-designer Tamara Mellon and Rimmel London model Coco Rocha.

Love It or Hate It: Hilary Duff's Super Braids

Speaking of ombré hair — which 76 percent of you said you're still into — check out Hilary Duff in New Jersey. She was there to sign copies of her novel Elixir and chose this braided up 'do for the occasion. It's a wee bit confusing. I'm not really sure where the braids start and finish, and how many of them there are . . . On paper I should love it: it mixes two of my most favourite things, braids and balayage. But I don't know, it kinda falls a bit flat. Y'think?
