From Jason Wu to Marni, the Spring 2012 shows were profuse with bold, vibrant shades. And while straight-from-the-catwalk cosmetics might be best left on the runway, there are a few ways you can make vivid tones quite wearable.
Myf Shepherd scored a beauty spread in the latest issue of Vogue Taiwan which sees her sport four different makeup looks, each inspired by the work of famous artists. Makeup master Deanna Melluso, using Make Up For Ever, used punchy pigments like red, blue, yellow and green, to colour block the Aussie model's eyes. It's great to see Myf at her colourful best for snapper Yossi Michaeli.
Stella McCartney's 2012 resort collection — which she showcased with a little garden party complete with hula hoops, croquet and yo-yo's! — has injected some much-needed brightness to our day. It's buh-bye Mondayitis (we don't care if it's a Tuesday, it feels like Monday to us), hellooooo beautiful brights. And even if we're unlikely to wear Stella's colours around our hips any time soon (we're all about the knits and gumboots right now), nothing's stopping us from popping them on our lips . . . or nails, or eyes or cheeks! OK, admittedly my fingers are T to the TIRED from tap, tap, tapping away but I'm just not ready for Fashion Week Spring 2011 to be three quarters ovah. Are you? Before we know it, it'll be over until February and that's just too long to wait. But alas, wait we will. Though, not before we've wrapped up the trends, of course. And joining the 1970s and neon brights in Milan was a makeup classic and some funky headgear . . .
It's a little odd, putting Bobbi Brown and colour in the same sentence: she is after all the woman who put nudes on the map, who made us see the sense in keeping the makeup palette simple. But like anything that she puts her name to, she's thinking of you first. She's not suggesting you take orange or red shadow right up to the eyelid, what she is saying is that injecting a little colour, alongside your more muted shades, isn't all bad. What with New York Fashion Week going full steam ahead, it's easy to forget that February should also be remembered for giving us some amazing new product launches, like the online-exclusive MAC in Lillyland collection. Now, when we heard about MAC pairing with Lilly Pulitzer, it did strike us as a little odd, the makeup brand normally being one to team up with the cool cats like Marilyn Minter (and Dame Edna, of course). But upon seeing Lilly's signature, preppy brights and swirls of florals in the Pearlmatte Face Powder ($46) and Pearlmatte Eye Shadow ($40) we didn't care. The easy way to brighten up a dull day.
