Having a better head of hair in the New Year is a lot easier to achieve than you think. Make a promise to yourself (and your hair) to follow these three easy steps to healthier strands. So put down those hotter-than-hot heating tools and resolve to have the hair of your dreams with these three simple tips.

1. Turn down the heat. You already know that heat styling causes split ends, breakage, and frizz, so do your hair a favor and turn down that dial on your curling iron, flat iron, and blow dryer.

2. Air-dry your hair. On the topic of heat styling, why not lessen the amount of time under the dryer by letting your hair air-dry first? This way you can still get that heat-styled look without spending nearly as much time, all while reducing potential damage. It's a win-win.

3. Try a silk pillowcase. So your hair is perfectly coiffed, and your makeup and wedding day nails looks amazing. You're all set for your big day . . . until you get into the bathroom and realise that the red wine you've been sipping has turned your lips and teeth an unsightly shade of aubergine. What do you do? Lucky for you, weddings are not only a great place to mix and mingle, they're also stocked with fixes for these party mishaps:

• Wine lips: Grab a lime and a dash of salt from the bar, sprinkle the salt on the lime and gently buff your lips and teeth. The acidity of the lime and the salt work together to create a makeshift exfoliant. Just don't make a habit of this — the acid from the lime can be harmful to your teeth.
• Frizzy hair: Get caught in the rain on your way to your reception? You're covered. Reach for some hand moisturiser and rub a tiny dollop into your hands. Lightly run your fingers through your hair, taking care not to focus on one area for too long (especially your roots). The moisturiser will flatten frizz, leaving you with silky strands all evening.
• Lipstick teeth: Oh, the dreaded lipstick teeth. Whether it's you or your Aunt Mildred, there's always someone affected by this common mishap. If your lipstick just doesn't want to stay put, use your lip balm as a barrier. Swipe some on your fingers and apply it to the innermost part of your lips. This will keep your pigment from transferring to your pearly whites.
• Bad breath: Bite into that entrée only to get the overwhelming taste of garlic? You don't have to suffer on your big night. Just scoot back over to the bar and grab some citrus. Sucking on a lemon for a few minutes helps promote saliva production, which aids in combating bad breath.

Frizzy hair can be worse in Summer, but for most of us, it's a year-round problem. The bonus (yep, there is one) of having frizzy hair is that it's less likely to get greasy, but that doesn't do much to placate us when fuzziness is cramping our hot new style. So what's a girl to do? We asked John Frieda International Creative Consultant Harry Josh, who has also shared his advice on finding the perfect cut for your face shape, for tips on combatting this common hair complaint. His number one tip is investing time (and/or money if your skills aren't great) in a good blow-dry. Instead of the usual 15-minute job before dashing out of the door, he says you should "spend 45 minutes to an hour so that you can milk it for the next three days." Also, Josh warns, we should be careful when washing our face: "The hair line and the nape are the two areas most prone to frizziness so you need to avoid getting these wet." If you're cleansing your face, "don't splash water," instead use a wash cloth. And "wear a shower cap". Simple, easy-to-follow advice.

But it doesn't have to be that way — we've rounded up some easy and effective tips to ensure your hair looks its best all Summer!

• Embrace your hair's natural texture. Pretty much every expert will tell you that Summer isn't the season to insist on poker straight stands at all time. Instead, if your hair has a natural kink or curl to it, just roll with it.
• It might sound simple but . . . deep conditioner is really a great tool for preventing frizz. After shampooing, apply it to the mid-lengths to ends of your hair and leave on for a few minutes before rinsing.
