Trend Alert: Spool-Shaped Top Knots

Over the past few seasons, top knots have taken on just about every texture and structure imaginable.

Over the past few seasons, top knots have taken on just about every texture and structure imaginable. The latest incarnation of this go-to look, however, is long and skinny, jutting out high and straight from atop the wearer's head. Think: the I Dream of Jeannie cylindrical ponytail meets Cindy Lou Who's cone-like up 'do. But this spooled shape somehow slants more cutting-edge than cartoonish.

This is in part to its simplicity. Celebrity fans Shirley Manson and Kelly Osbourne, who have both been spotted out in the spindly style multiple times, opted for extremely slicked-back versions. Nicole Richie, on the other hand, went for a softer, less-severe interpretation of the trend. Whether you wear it with face-framing fringe or doused in gel, be ready to turn plenty of heads with this one.

2012 Logies: Laura Dundovic

Laura Dundovic went for the classic red carpet combo of a smoky eye and up 'do for tonight's Logies.

Laura Dundovic went for the classic red carpet combo of a smoky eye and up 'do for tonight's Logies. Giving her eye makeup a modern twist with the graphic block of pigment, we can't deny that it's pretty, but I almost wish that she'd gone one step further and really had fun with the eyeliner trend that's big this season. The rest of her makeup stuck within the pink colour family with a peachy-pink blush and iridescent pink gloss rounding out Laura's look. For hair, the Dating In The Dark presenter decided to forgo classic waves and instead picked a high bun.

Love & Other Drugs Aussie Face-Off: Jess vs. Nicole

The last Face-Off we did (between the Gossip Girl leading ladies Blake Lively and Leighton Meester) was neck and neck, until last night when Blake crept into the lead by ONE PERCENT.

The last Face-Off we did (between the Gossip Girl leading ladies Blake Lively and Leighton Meester) was neck and neck, until last night when Blake crept into the lead by ONE PERCENT. Nail-biting stuff, peeps. Nail-biting stuff. But today's one is going to be even more dramatic because it's our very first all-Australian Face-Off! Models Jess Hart and Nicole Trunfio both went to the NY screening of Love & Other Drugs earlier this week. Jess looked all inspired by her international runway shows wearing a cute little top knot, strawberry red lips and a wash of gold on the inner V to make those baby blues pop. Noice. Nicole meanwhile went all sultry on us with a metallic-infused espresso eye which looks gorgeous against those bold brows of hers. Her skin looked flawless and glamorous and she finished the look with clear gloss. Imma hand this one straight over to you: who looked best? Jess Hart or Nicole Trunfio?

Love It or Hate It: Mandy Moore Does Disney Darling in LA

The MAC and Disney Venomous Villains collaboration went off so I know there's a place in your hearts for a little Disney animation, especially when it involves all things beauty, so imma suggest you volunteer to take your nieces to see Tangled, starring Mandy Moore.

The MAC and Disney Venomous Villains collaboration went off so I know there's a place in your hearts for a little Disney animation, especially when it involves all things beauty, so imma suggest you volunteer to take your nieces to see Tangled, starring Mandy Moore. We won't give away too much but it's the tale of Rapunzel leaving the castle to pursue love. Cute. And y'know what else is cute? Mandy Moore — who voices the leading lady — at the film's LA premiere last night. The 26-year-old went for casual glamour with her tousled top knot, which is making a huge comeback this season. We saw it on January Jones at a Donatella Versace dinner, Kim Kardashian while out shopping and now Mandy Moore at a film premiere, proving this style has versatility. Teamed with a pop of rose blush, some olive green shadow and creamy pink lip, it's a chic and sweet look. We heart it. You too? Or not so much? Vote now!

January Jones Hearts the Danish Bun . . . Here's How to Do It

The Danish bun, top knot, high bun, call it what you will, is showing no signs of going out of fashion.

The Danish bun, top knot, high bun, call it what you will, is showing no signs of going out of fashion. In fact January Jones wore it to a Donatella Versace dinner for Central Saint Martins — where Stella McCartney studied — further cementing its status as the only way to wear your hair up this season. I love it because it's super hot and super easy to do. It's elegance without the effort. (Read: my kinda style.) Here's how to recreate January's look in five simple steps . . .

STEP 1: First up, apply KMS California Flatout Straightening Crème ($37.50) to your roots so that you get a super-sleek look.

STEP 2: Separate your hair into two sections by parting it from ear to ear (imagine you’re doing a half-ponytail). Work with the back section first, brushing the hair with a natural bristle brush towards the crown. Secure that for a minute, while you smooth out the front section, brushing back towards the crown. Now combine the two sections together, and using your brush to flatten the hair out, pull hair fairly tight — but still comfortably — into a high ponytail that in the centre of the top of your head.

2010 ARIA Awards: Jessica Mauboy

Seems like the ARIAs had a tress code: undone glamour.

Seems like the ARIAs had a tress code: undone glamour. Not only was Lara Bingle rocking some teased tresses to tonight's awards, but Jessica Mauboy too. Jess' high bun is seriously dishevelled, and while it's a style I LOVE for daytime, I'm not sure it's really red carpet ready, are you? She's also gone for a whited-out lip — wonder if her and Bingle got ready together — and matched her mani to the look, veto-ing the stiletto nail in favour of a solid square shape. Jessica's makeup was all about the eyes. Talk about lash-o-rama! The white shadow on Jess' inner V really makes her eyes pop, but it's extended a little too far towards her nose. What do you think about her whole beauty look? Rate it?

How-To: Get a Sleek Yet Soft Bun Like Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian has two go-to hairstyles: either out and wavy or pulled back tightly in a high bun or ponytail.

Kim Kardashian has two go-to hairstyles: either out and wavy or pulled back tightly in a high bun or ponytail. Yesterday she was spotted with the latter style while out shopping and getting a manicure in New York, but we noticed that her bun wasn’t as tight and polished as we’ve seen it on the red carpet. Here’s how you can also get Kim’s ’do:

STEP 1: This style will be easier to do with slightly dirty hair. If your hair feels too clean and slippery, spray your roots with some dry shampoo.

STEP 2: To achieve the same smoothness and tightness of Kim’s bun, you’ll need to use a brush to pull it back into a high ponytail (your fingers won’t give the same effect).

STEP 3: Give your ponytail some texture with KMS California Hairplay Sea Salt Spray ($36.95). Then softly twist your ponytail and wrap it around the hair tie like you would a normal bun. It doesn’t need to be tight — the point of this look is to give the bun a soft, fluffy look.

STEP 4: Secure your bun with bobby pins. Spray with a hairspray like KMS Hairstay Medium Hold Hairspray ($19.50) to finish and hold the look.

Love It or Hate It: Sienna Miller Goes Danish in Germany

Sienna Miller is GREAT at switching up her style.

Sienna Miller is GREAT at switching up her style. She's in the league of Kate Moss when it comes to going from a scruffbag-but-still-sexy daytime look to  a super-glamorous-but-not-too-done nighttime style. And the UNESCO Charity Gala in Germany on Saturday night was no exception. While most would've gone for a structured up 'do, Sienna paired her nude number with a Danish-style bun, similar to the one Kate Bosworth wore to the Chanel Rouge Coco dinner in Feb. But, as always, she's stamped her own mark on the style, pulling the front strands into a centre part. LOVE. (Mental note: steal that style.) I also heart the lip colour which Sienna seems to have taken rather a shine too — check out these dupes — it's gorge and trendy. But the heavy bronzer and slight shine are giving me flashbacks to Derby Day. I combat them by mixing a bronzing illuminator, like NARS Orgasm Illuminator, in with my foundation. It gives a wash of colour without the obvious bronzer marks. Then blot and go. Like?

The sass & bide gals may have kicked off LFW last Friday but it's taken us a little while to get our hands on this super-exclusive backstage vid. Trust me though, it's worth the wait. Not only do designers Sarah-Jane Clarke and Heidi Middleton share the inspiration of their Spring 2011 collection but Aussie hair director Renya Xydis, working for ghd, swings by for a chat about the sass & bide girl and this season's cornrow-braids-cum-top-knot hairstyle. She said that it's a "cool and edgy" look that "oozes confidence" and is super-easy to adapt to a wearable look for Summer. Love It or Hate It: AnnaLynne McCord's Braided Knotted Bun

Aside from wondering whether 90210's AnnaLynne McCord has any other poses up her sleeve other than her signature seductive kiss blowing, I'm also wondering what in the world is going on with that hair of hers.

Aside from wondering whether 90210's AnnaLynne McCord has any other poses up her sleeve other than her signature seductive kiss blowing, I'm also wondering what in the world is going on with that hair of hers. She was at the Self magazine Women Doing Good Awards in NYC and from a distance — a mega, mega long one — it looks like a simple high bun, but up close you'll see it's not. It's a little bit knotted. A little bit braided. Perhaps she couldn't decide which NYFW look she liked best — Marchesa or Davidelfin so combined the two? What do you think, has the girl done good? One thing she has most definitely nailed is her makeup palette. Gorge.
