Doing it for the fiery redheads, Jessica Chastain has kept her colour palette rosy for the Critics' Choice Awards. Demure with a hairstyle similar to fellow actress Jaime King, her lip is somewhere between a stain and a lipstick. and the colour is a lovely sheer watermelon pink. Natural redheads are known for their fair skin and, yes, burn more easily, but new research shows that the melanin found in people with red hair is also linked to the development of melanoma — even without sun exposure. A study published in the online journal Nature found that redheads produce a different type of melanin than those with darker skin and hair called pheomelanin. Researchers found that this type of melanin in mice led to melanoma development even before they were exposed to UV light.
"There is something about the redhead genetic background that is behaving in a carcinogenic fashion, independent of UV," David Fisher, the cancer biologist who led the study, told Nature. The study shows that pheomelanin itself is a cancer-causing agent. But researchers say that the sun is still a driving force in the development of skin cancers in redheads, despite this genetic discovery. The bottom line: Redheads should be even more keenly aware of changes in their skin, freckles, and moles. Make sure you have a dermatologist regularly check out your skin, and be proactive in keeping your skin protected.
Lindsey Wixson's bee-stung pout helped shoot her to model-of-the-moment status back in 2010 but now it's her hair that's taking centre stage. In the August issue of Vogue Japan — which sees the 18-year-old rock green and peach shadows — Lindsey's traded in her light brown locks for a darker, more auburn-toned hue. It was only last week that we spied January Jones with her shoulder-length blonde locks at the Young Hollywood Awards, but as she strolled the streets of LA today it was a different story all-together. The Mad Men actress debuted a freshly dyed longer 'do, though there's no word on whether the style switcheroo is due to an upcoming movie role or personal choice. January's never shied away from experimenting with new hair colours — she joined the pink brigade back in March and has played with various shades of red over the years — but this is still a dramatic change we weren't expecting. Jessica Alba isn't the only one talking about her looks in the June issue of US Marie Claire. Florence and the Machine frontwoman Florence Welch also opens up about her appearance, in particular her famous fiery locks. Speaking of her red hair, the 25-year-old says: I'm a lifer now. I've tried going back to brown, but I don't recognise myself." She joins a long list of women, including Christina Hendricks and Emma Stone, who favour the bold hair hue over their natural colour. In the interview Florence also addresses her love for couture, saying it comes down to aesthetics rather than merely having expensive tastes! There may have been a movement towards brunette in the recent A/W 2012 shows but someone bucking the trend is Natasha Poly. The Russian stunner was given a red-haired makeover for the May cover of Vogue Japan, which was snapped by Daniele Duella and Iango Henzi, and we're big fans of the look. With her auburn hair styled in a retro fashion to one side by Luigi Murenu, it's shaping up to be one of our favourite editorial hairstyles of the year.
