The 10 Most Liked Australian Celebrities of 2013

Australian entertainment industry magazine Encore took to the public — well, 3,500 people — to find out who the country’s most liked celebrities are.

Australian entertainment industry magazine Encore took to the public — well, 3,500 people — to find out who the country’s most liked celebrities are. (While they were at it, they also worked out the nation’s most disliked celebrities.) The interesting thing about the lists is that the top two on both hold the same position from last year, proving that Australia’s love (or hate) for them isn’t fleeting. The most liked list, which is made up of mostly actors and a couple of comedians, also makes it seem like Aussies prefer veteran stars who have also experienced international success — at 31, Hamish Blake is the youngest in the top 10. Even if you already know who got the top spot based on last year’s result, click through to see the rest.

Who else but Kate Moss would incite outfit envy while she ran errands, wearing a simple striped jumper and tight pants? Who else makes us want to whip up to Valentino just so we can wear a pair of his heels when we walk the streets like Miranda? No one, really — and that's why these ladies are regualr fixtures in our best-dressed list. As for red carpet styles? Taylor Swift knocked it out of the park with her sexy mini, and Olivia Palermo? Well, she's Olivia Palermo — of course she nailed her black Dior sheath. There's plenty more to see, so click through the gallery and tell us what you think!

Jessica Biel Brings Hitchcock West With Helen and Toni

Jessica Biel wore Gucci to the LA premiere of Hitchcock last night.

Jessica Biel wore Gucci to the LA premiere of Hitchcock last night. She was joined on the red carpet by two of her fellow leading ladies, a Dolce & Gabbana-clad Helen Mirren and Toni Collette, in Alex Perry. Jessica tweeted a photo of herself with Helen and Toni, captioning it, "Lemme tell you about my girl crush on these two . . . Helen and Toni!"

The trio were together for another screening Sunday in NYC with co-star Scarlett Johansson, who missed out on the West Coast event. Scarlett was at the Late Show yesterday, having stayed behind in the Big Apple ahead of her 28th birthday, which is today! Hitchcock is released in Australia on Jan. 10.

Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Biel Debut Hitchcock in NYC

Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Biel attended the NYC premiere of their movie, Hitchcock, last night at the Ziegfeld Theatre.

Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Biel attended the NYC premiere of their movie, Hitchcock, last night at the Ziegfeld Theatre. They went for very different looks on the red carpet: Scarlett was edgy in a Rodarte mini, while Jessica went for something a bit more mature in an Oscar de la Renta combo, which she paired with Lorraine Schwartz earrings.

Jessica and Scarlett posed for photos alongside their co-stars Toni Collette, Helen Mirren and Danny Huston after doing a long day of press at the junket together. Jessica joked on Twitter about how the ladies all looked at different photographers during the group shots. She wrote, "Our Hitchcock cast! Clearly no one knew where to look and when . . . " Missing from the fun was Anthony Hopkins, who plays the title role. Anthony Hopkins' Hitchcock impression looked quite good from Hitchcock's trailer, and Aussie moviegoers can see it for themselves when the picture arrives in cinemas on Jan. 10.

Rebecca Gibney and P.J. Hogan Talk Mental Inspiration, Toni Collette, and Working With Kids

A few weeks ago, media and special guests were invited to a Sydney preview screening of the new Australian film Mental.

A few weeks ago, media and special guests were invited to a Sydney preview screening of the new Australian film Mental. P.J. Hogan, who wrote and directed the dark comedy, was on hand to introduce the picture, asking the audience to watch with an “open mind.” Following the screening, P.J. and stars Rebecca Gibney, Deborah Mailman and Sam Clark stayed back for a Q&A session, where P.J. revealed most of the film was based on his experiences growing up, and that central character Shaz, portrayed by Toni Collette, was/is a real person. (Anthony LaPaglia and Liev Schreiber also star.) A few days later I sat down with P.J. and Rebecca for a cosy chat to find out more about the film, including what it was like for P.J. to reunite with Toni, his Muriel’s Wedding leading lady, how Rebecca felt about gaining weight for her role, and how they struck a balance between comedy and darkness. Mental Trailer: Toni Collette Brings Some Order to a Crazy Family

Most of us probably remember a time growing up when we felt there must’ve be something wrong with us because we didn’t always fit in.

Most of us probably remember a time growing up when we felt there must’ve be something wrong with us because we didn’t always fit in. So what happens when you have five girls experiencing that in the one family? You get Mental, a movie about a mother who can’t cope (Rebecca Gibney) and a busy politician father (Anthony LaPaglia) who ships her off to a mental hospital under the guise of a holiday. Unable to deal with the girls himself, he recruits a hitchhiker named Shaz (Toni Collette) off the street to be their nanny.

Toni reunited with her Muriel’s Wedding director P.J. Hogan for the Australian comedy; he also wrote the script. It looks like it’s filled with the same zany humour that made Hogan’s 1994 film an Aussie favourite, with no shortage of colourful characters, from Collette’s lead to the five supporting young girls. Mental is out on Oct. 4 but you can check out the trailer after the break.
